what the hell is "figgy pudding", anyway?

for 53 years i have listened to people sing about figgy pudding, and never wondered what it was till today, so i just had to find out. it sounds better than chinese moon cake, which is full of oil, and varies in fillings. kinda like the typical "fruit cake".

finally, NPR is useful for something.

Nonetheless you disgust me, and I take comfort in the knowledge that your obituary will be nowhere near as humorous as mine.

The next time I hear "THE RANGE IS NOW HOT", it just wont be the same.

Max tried another question. "What sort of people live about here?"
"In THAT direction," the Jin said, waving its right paw round, "lives a Han: And in THAT direction," waving the other paw, "lives a Ming Hare. Visit either you like: they're both mad."
"But I don't want to go among mad people," Max remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Jin: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Max.
"You must be," said the Jin, "or you wouldn't have come here."

It has brandy in it, how bad could it be?

I still have the big bowl my mum used to make our Christmas pudding in. Mum used to start weeks before Christmas, putting all the ingredients in and then all the kids would get a chance to give it a stir with the big wooden spoon for good luck. Then she would wrap it in greaseproof paper (parchment or baking paper to Americans) and put it in the freezer to age. Some families put a sixpence coin (old UK money) in the pudding and whomever got it in their serving was supposed to have good luck throughout the year.

It was thawed well before Christmas and boiled to get it toasty hot for serving on Christmas Day. Had to be served with white sauce though, not just custard. Really coated the inside of your guts and was a great end to a wonderful Christmas meal. Bloody marvelous...

Figgy pudding is an absolute delight. If you can get or make some, you won’t be disappointed.

I can tell you this: don't come to my door demanding figgy pudding and refusing to leave until you get some. Not the hill you want to die on.

Leave it to the Brits to name a boiled cake "pudding" and call real pudding "custard".

OMG!!! Just read the recipe and realized it is the forerunner of the evil Christmas Fruitcake. You know, that gift that keep getting re-gifted.

This 33rpm record is in my father's collection and one day if I outlive him (it might happen) the entire KT catalog will be in my collection.

It brought back a lot of memories for me, enjoy ya old timers like me.

No, but the fondness factor does increase in proportion to the Brandy or Rum content.

British cuisine catches a lot of jokes for being supposedly bland but some of it is pretty tasty. A few boiled cabbage eaters in lower England but the northerners and Welsh eat good. I really need to make some Shepards pie soon. I like to use Worcestershire sauce and a pinch of chilli in my mix for a little zip. A lot of the Brits I've run into have a thing for Indian curries too, the spicier the better.

My mom ate it. Wife eats it. I pick the nuts and cherries out. It would probably be good SHTF food.

That's a fact. Even ants and rats won't eat it. Probably would taste the same
