Colt M16A1 Reissue
Gents...
Any idea when the next batch of Colt M16A1 reissue clones will be released on the market? Thinking about getting one of these for my collection. |

I have a hard time imagining that Colt will mfg any more unless you know something that I don’t? If they do mfg anymore they’ll surely be horrifically expensive.

I built one in semi auto several years ago. We were just out shooting it this afternoon. My 16 years old just loves it as it is like the one I carried well over 40 years ago.

Unless it has to be a Colt for collecting purposes, you’d likely be better off building a clone on a Colt receiver or a Nodak Spud (there are companies that can add “correct” markings). That project would probably come in at under what a new Colt A1 reissue would cost you.

I've an M16-A1, built with an Apex Colt parts kit, paired with an original Colt barrel, on a Nodak lower. Close enough for my purposes, all Colt except for the lower, and duplicates what I always shot on the range. It's also in much better condition than anything the Corps ever issued me. We won't talk about the beat-to-shit XM16-E1 I carried in Ranger School in '76.

If able to get your FFL to cash in a favor or are an FFL at wholesale would likely be a decent long term investment of they keep production limited. Might even be good investment at MSRP. If Colt goes belly up or dot gov only it would only go up in value. Have quite a few snake guns such as Pythons, Diamondbacks an Anaconda plus 1st and 2nd edition Cobras that were high at $450 to $700 when purchased but all are $2,000 for even a beater now.
Pony gun guys will pay the price to join the club or round out a collection. If luck and keeping eyes open to heirs selling stuff on Craigslist or catch them coming in gunshow or called by mutual friend I will add one to my collection if had to sell off my shooter grade Python or a Belgian Hi Power to finance it. Never would have guessed back in the day when there was at least one or two Colt wheelguns in every gun shop display they would stop even making them much less the prices a nice snake gun, especially rare variants command now. Have several have purposely not researched value to resist temptation to sell like did with too many SP1's first cancer diagnosis and could move into ban states for 4x to 5x original investment.

I will second the above ..At the price point Colt wants for there clones it is cheeper to buy a SP1 which other then markings and being non FA is a M16A1 ...Or go the Nodak rout which is also cheep ..I mean I think troy is making clones which are cheeper but its troy so ...

They need a push and a nudge to release a Portuguese AR10 clone.

Or one of those goofy-looking beer-can type flashiders that were on the 1955 Hollywood mfg AR10s. Wonder if John Thomas could do one of those??
Also wondering why their 601-style clone that has the green (too light) stocks has the mag fence?

Brownells really stepped up their game. I'm hoping they put out a Portuguese AR10 clone.
I did pick up a Colt reissue M16A1 a few weeks ago. It's nice but I'm not sure yet if it's $2500 worth of nice...time will tell. |

I might have to pull the trigger on the Brownells Dutch Ar10. Looks sweet, but I’ll wait some reviews before plunking down $1700.
I have a feeling John Thomas will find a way to make it look more correct. Last edited by rbgonoles; January 24, 2018 at 19:01. |

I’d be very excited if they fix or if JT can fix the FSB and if they use a correct looking grip. Regardless, it’s awesome offering for those who love Cold War battle rifles.

Some things aren't about money. If you love the reissue and want one it isn't a question about the cost compared to originals. Enjoy the hobby and buy what you can afford.

As far as the Colt clones go I think they are over priced and not even made in Colts factory just has the name from what I've read. As far as Brownells AR10 goes the receivers look good but I want to see one in person. The reason for that is I ordered the brown furniture to send of to John to have painted coconut for a 601 build and it is crap. The but stock is cheap and the forend doesn't fit in the retaining cap worth a crap they sent me a second set that had the same problem then had the guys at the warehouse check all they had in stock and all had the same problem. So with the AR10 I would have to consider what original furniture goes for plus a correct FSB and the barrel work to fit it. I'll have to wait and see one in person to make up my mind on it.

On the 5.56 guns, the brown and green look way too light compared to “real ones” and spot-on clones.

Who makes the AR10 receivers Brownells is using? I've never liked the AR15 but when I see a proper looking AR10 with the upper charging handle,
![]() With that said, Brownells was selling a blemo Nodak M16A1 lower in black for $85, but I forgot about it. Now the blemo is $150 (https://www.brownells.com/rifle-part...rod107496.aspx), $10 less than you can get a new one from Nodak. Yes, I do have a kit but I think I can wait now...

The "blem" on the $85 Brownells A1 lowers was that they put "SAFE" and "FIRE" markings on the right sidewall of the receiver just like most current production A2 style receivers. Pass. Hard pass.
Nodak provides the basic forgings for the Brownells retro receivers but that is the extent of their involvement. I went with a lower directly from Nodak. Having NDS machine and hand polish the receiver was definitely worth the extra $10 and several month wait. The lower was so perfect that I almost felt bad driving a roll pin into it. Almost. Truth is that after you account for the high Brownells shipping and other charges (signature fee?!? WTF?) the NDS was actually cheaper. |

I haven’t had one of the Brownell’s guns in my hands but can say that I’ve always found NDS stuff to be top-notch.

I am interested in possibly getting the M16A1 clone from Brownell's at some point in the future. Are these going to be a limited run, or a regular production item?
