SNAKES ....
'Tis the season to be reptilian ...
Best mate just e-mailed me a couple of pics of a good sized Common Brown Snake he shot at the back of his house yesterday ( http://www.billabongsanctuary.com.au...ern_brown.html ), he shortened another by about six inches with a shovel last week when he was out checking on his chooks.... ![]() ![]()

I found this interesting from your link. I would have thought more people would die from snake bites in the Land from Down Under than 5/year.
Despite being home to so many species of venomous snakes, Australia records only about 5 deaths from snake bite per year. More deaths are caused by horses, or even bee stings, than by snakes. The belly is cream, yellow or orange, with characteristic orange or dark grey blotches. These can be seen if the snake is close enough to feel threatened, and raises its head up off the ground. If you are this close to see a snakes belly, I am guessing you or the snake are either dead or going to be so very soon. ![]() .

Yes..... thanks to having so many snakes that can kill you we here are very well educated about the dos and don'ts of being around them and dealing with a bite. Every hospital carries a solid supply of treatments for all snakes common to their areas as well as some universal treatments. Snake/spider bite is a BIG component of any first aid training here and most people are just a little attuned to the dangers. This was my personal issue with Steve Irwin, he influenced a generation of kids NOT to respect the dangers posed by snakes out here. I am NOT a proponent of killing snakes UNLESS they happen to be around homes etc.

Wow, a subject that I like "snakes". We have our snakes to avoid in Texas, but the brown's are deadly...correct? SB

What gets me is that the eyes have round pupils rather than cat like slits and thier tails are long thin and skinny . In the states ( Tennnessee where I live ) wwe are taught to look out for the slit type eyes , thick blunt tales , as well as the pits which this fella has. As a side note I have found numerous red back spiders on my property , black widows as well. I wasn't too sure of the redbacks as they were not something that I had seen prior to the last 5-6 yrs. Found them on the web ( !! ) seems they are indigenous to Australia , not necessarily my home state. I do agree to the idea of not killing unless too close to the house , my sweetie is a Leukimia victim , very low immune system due to chemo and the nature of the diease , so can't tolerate too many crawlees too close to the house. The cats seem to take care of the slithers pretty much , only seen one or two snakes here in the last 7-8 years.

It is common for southern black widows to have red marks on the back of the abdomen. Further, Australian red-backs are pretty much the same as what we call black widows, they are a spider found widely throughout the temperate and tropical world.
Eastern brown snakes can deliver over 13 lethal doses of venom with a single bite, and they aren't too shy about defending themselves. They are fast, agile, and just very dangerous. |

I was with my son this summer, crawling around some rocks trying to set up a good coyote hunting position, I warned him about rattlers, his answer "yeah sure whatever", then mr Mohave rattler buzzed, boy long jumped about 10' ran another 20' before stopping. Lesson learned. I didn't know he could move that fast.

I can remember a pitch-black Friday night in August 2003 near Leesburg VA, when some kid was getting logs out of a pile for their campfire. He was wearing sport sandals and the pissed-off snake bit him on the top of his foot. The scream from across the field was unforgettable.

Well, I enjoyed the snakes and their snacks picture fest. They must have very strong acid in their stomachs! Amazing what they get past their jaws.

You can shoot'um, cut their head off, cut'um apart...... But they won't die until the sun goes down or it thunders, uh, or until fully cooked.
