What receiver are you going to use? ORF or D-Technik? Or going the roll-your-own re-weld route?

Not a re-design of an ak and its a Czech rifle, not Polish. AK and VZ58 are completely different animals. The only thing they share is the ammo they eat.
The extreme curve of the mag gives it a similar appearance from afar and to those not in the know. I built one from one of Apex's parts kits. Mine wasn't unfired but in excellent condition and built up really nice and is very accurate. It doesn't like to feed Yugo brass ammo though. I'm sure a massage on the feed ramp would fix that, but I haven't gotten around to doing that yet. Before you order your receiver, you need to know that there are different barrel sizes at the point where the barrel presses into the receiver so you'll need a precise measurement and order a receiver with the correct press fit for your particular barrel. The differences are a matter of a mil. or 2 of an inch. Make sure you use a calibrated tool when you measure it. |

After reading http://50ae.net/vz58-2/ I hoped you would have also read http://50ae.net/VZ-vs-AK/
If you choose to build it out, go with the D-Technik receiver, ORF isn't quite in spec with regards to the feed ramp and receiver cover pin hole, which also functions to contain the striker and recoil spring. |

i found out that CNC warrior is finally doing the vz rec and they're taking preorders for them..due jan-feb at $340.. i think thats the way to go..i've built on the orf rec but i got mine long before they went out of business..i had to knurl the barrel for a tighter fit but it came out fine. i also built one w/an original czech rec but 10rd that took some fitting.. cbr

Sweet looks like they have the flash hider needed as well. As far as compliance parts is there anything good out there besides ORF? Seems everything they did was jacked up.

czechpointusa.com has all the parts you need. Compliance parts can also be had from Bonesteele Arms, including some excellent FCGs. The only vz-58s that don't need to play the 10 or less game are the vz-58 pistols and the single stack 10 round magazine only versions. There is also a Cali compliant version with bullet button that loads with stripper clips.

I know what you mean. I kinda wanted one of these a while back and now those new receivers coming are making them look even better when I don't have to use ORF.

58
First 58 I saw was in 1967. Been wanting one since. Bought Czechpoint a few years ago. Superb weapon. Light, fast handleing and accurate.

I pulled the proverbial trigger and bought a folding stock kit, bayo, and a few mags. Next, I just need to place an order on a CNCwarrior receiver and comp parts. Then find a builder to ratchet one together for me.
What kind of finish should be used on these?

This seller (Not my ad; no connection) has new condition Vz.58 mags for under $16 each when you buy 10. The ones sent to me are a very dark gray, almost black. Czechpoint-usa has the compliance parts for $1.50 each if you need them.

I built mine up on an ORF receiver and that part of it went together quickly. They are really not that bad and the selector mod is not that bad either, using the receiver as a guide when final assembly. I put the CNC warrior muzzle device on and it looks like the original, so no complaints there. The issue I had was with the CNC warrior HTS. It took a bit of thinking to figure out what was happening, but once the lightbulb turned on, a very simple fix. The CNC warrior sear sat just a tad too far DOWN and locked up the entire works upon cocking and would not let anything happen. This caused me to reach inside the guts with a small tool, trip the sear and then disassemble as normal. A little weld "spot" under neath it and Dremel to thickness cured that. A pretty simple build, really. At one time, I had 20 or 30 of these kits and I noticed a little difference in the colors ranging from a nice medium battleship gray to a greenish gray to a dark, almost HK gray. I would paint to match whatever mags you got. By the way, lockup on these lightweight rifles is not even close to a standard AK. They use a toggle similar to the German P38 if you are familiar with those. Some folks have experienced a slight "hammering" of the receiver metal at this lockup point, but so far, I have not heard of it going past only a slight amount. Good luck.

looking at gunbroker, the VZ58's seem to be flying under the radar of all the ban hysteria...looking at what things are actually being bid up to, a nice D-Technic gun can be had for under $1000...
that's a hell of a value in the land of $2500 dollar AR15's...

Full kits with barrel are still around $250. $340 for receiver and under a bill for rest of Comp parts and you got a vz 58 for $690. Better buy mags first though.

Recievers
https://assaultweaponsofohio.net/sho...tegory&path=61
These are the folks who I purchased my reciever from. They post on gunbroker cheaper than what is on the site. I will start building mine after my trip to the sandbox. Sorry, haven't been around due to training... Hope it helps! |
