Peak Oil is here, we are screwed, the end is here.

Hasn't the U.S. policy been to use up everyone else's energy first, then ship our energy out when prices are quadruple what we've paid? Might be the only thing this country has gotten right in a long time.

Your obvious sarcasm and derision regarding peak oil is duly noted. You might want to consider that there is a fair amount of energy required to liberate the oil from the shale as well as the fact it doesn't burn and refine as nicely as Saudi light sweet crude. Peak oil doesn't mean we're running out, but we've reached maximum production capacity. You are right, it has already happened. |

I don't think there's any policy. It's just that when crude url gets to certain price and stays there, it becomes profitable to produce what's in the USA. New technology and methods also means there is more to be recovered. That's why USA in number one producer of natural gas and oil production is rising.
In the past OPEC could turn on the tap, lower price, and kill domestic production, but I'm not sure they are willing or could do that right now (current events). |

Also worth noting that production is rising in spite of roadblocks the greenies and current leaders are always throwing up.

EPC WIN,
You are correct that has been stated policy for a long time. We use up Arab oil first then use our own. Its the primary reason the Dems stop domestic drilling, they are saving the oil for later. Thorack

Present technology requires massive quantities of water to produce this shale oil economically enough to show a profit.
There is not enough surface water to meet large scale oil production demands, subsurface aquifers have not been delineated and quantified, government will most like regulate all water resources in the area,, aquifers are recharged by flowing surface waters. Arid West Texas was made to bloom by water taken from the huge Edwards Aquifer, farming lowered that aquifer to the degree farming became a threat to some of the larger cities in the vicinity. Oil Companies have been investing part of the billions in profits they make and receive tax exemptions for to develop the new technology. These shale strata's are drilled using mud motor impellers that turn a drill bit on the end of the drill pipe, the pipe and bit are in turn steered by electronics monitored and manned by crews of technicians in addition to the normal complement of drill crews, costs are several more times costly than methods used to get cheap oil. I believe we will have more oil,,, but not more cheap oil. When we run out of oil we will gasify coal the other fossil fuel. |

Who cares, we have enough wind and solar to run this whole country, it's free and causes no pollution, we don't need oil anymore. Throw in some wave action and we are over the top.

If you think wasting 2 gallons of gas to get one gallon of ethanol is the definition of efficiency, then by all means continue with the shale oil exploration.

Martin has the answer. Necessity is the mother of invention.
The DOE did a small gasification test burn in the mid 1980s at the mine I worked at. The results exceeded any expectations. This was in a low BTU outcropped seam. Wait until they refine the technology to gasify the seams too deep to mine conventionally. It's estimated we have enough coal to power the country for 200 years. By then, our descendants will have figured out controlled nuclear fussion.

Unless something drastic happens, we are set to out produce the middle eastern oil ticks and become the worlds larger exporter by 2020.

There is a difference between global production and US production.
Munster, did you read the whole article regarding the difficulties of in situ liberation of the oil shale? The process has been around for two decades IIRC and is still not working efficiently. |
