Bullet selection

Hello guys I'm going to be building my first FAL here soon, and would like to take it hog hunting this fall. So I am planning to load some hunting ammo for it. Have any of you had problems with your FAL feeding bullets with exposed lead tips, or round/flat noses? Any advice here would be greatly appreciated.

Congrats! Now you can get your rifle done! As far as ammo goes, I have only shot FMJ out of a FAL. I am curious to see if they can function well with something other.

Apparently feral pigs have become a problem in an area close by, so I'm curios as to whether hunting type bullets will feed without problem.

Good to know they work, I thought that hard polymere "pointy" tips should work. I tell you what, having shot that into ballistics gell, don't shoot where you want to eat. Nosler BT's fragment, alot.

I've used the Nosler Accubond .308" 150 bullets and they hold together well. They have a plastic tip similar to the Ballistic Tip bullets, but I haven't used them in the FAL. Only in a bolt action rifle. I wasn't thinking of trying other weights but the 150 grain ones seem to stay together well. enough. Heavier ones should do so even more so.

Yeah I like the accubonds myself, I dont buy them anymore though, since I can't go and buy seconds from the factory.

I still have a small ammount of 200 gr. accubonds laying around, I'm messing around with a subsonic load at the moment

I loaded up a dummy round for the afore mentioned project, but I wanted to try Hornady's 170 gr. Flat Point. It will not feed from the magazine, the face hits the walls. Likely needs at least a round nose to function, if not spitzer types.

Hornaday 150 grain sst's. I have killed many animals with them and they provide very good accuracy too.

Gota +1 this also.

IMHO Hornady bullets are way underated for quality & accuracy.

In my experience over 30+ years of shooting, Hornady bullets have almost always been more accurate in everything I've owned/reloaded for.

Man, I could tell you some story's about their 139 gr. BTSP and H-322 out of my 14" 7mm T/CU Contender that you would never believe....

Another underrated bullet and easy on the pocketbook as well is the Remington core lokt. Although the lead is exposed, it is protected by the copper jacket except for the tip. I have shot it and the Hornady out of my FAL's without a problem.

I really like Hornady bullets, they're a 1/2-1/3rd of the cost of Nosler bullets on average, and just as good, even better as far as I can tell. I only bought Nosler factory seconds for a while, because it was convenient and inexspensive at the time.

We were running out of day light, but I tested a reduced load, and came pretty close to subsonic.

.308 Win, Win Brass, CCI #200 Large Rifle Primers, 15.0 gr IMR Trail Boss, 200 gr. bullet, and got 1310 fps.

Feels like someone is patting you on the shoulder.
