Best 1-4x scope <$500

I was set on the Burris MTAC 1-4 but realized that it is set up for 3 gun, whereas I am looking for a practical scope for tactical use. This is my first scope and I am not looking to spend a lot, I just want to see how this goes. With those criteria in mind, I have been paying close attention to the GRSC CRS 1-4x scope. Does anyone have any experience with this scope? I love the reticle design but have some concerns about its clarity and illumination.. the pictures available on reviews appear to be out of focus so I am unable to verify the scope's quality.

Any other recommendations would be appreciated. I prefer BDC reticles- calibrated for 5.56 is acceptable but optional calibration for 7.62 would be great. This will be used on a 16" FAL intended to shoot out to 600 yards (but usually 25-200 yards).

If interested you can find links to videos and reviews of the scope here:

I bought a rifle that had a Bushnell 3200 already on it. It is a pretty good scope, better than I thought it would be. I bought another Bushnell and it's pretty good too. I think the cheap Bushnell's are probably like any cheap ones - CHEAP. The better ones seem to be pretty good. Optics Planet ships for free.

Here's a link to the 1-4 X 24 Bushnell.

I've been looking at the Leupold VX-R Tactical line lately.

They aren't UNDER $500, but they're close.

IF it was a true 1 power instead of 1.25 it would be money....and I would own one already.

Yeah....because going prone/kneeling and engaging 8" steel plates at up to 400 yards as fast as possible a la 3 Gun is not very "tactical".......

That being said..... I agree with you and I am not a big fan of that scopes reticle either....
Its really hard to find a good BDC scope in 1-4 or 1-6 even without a second mortgage....

I shoot on private property not civilized ranges with officers and mall ninjas. Sometimes I even lay down on the ground and get dirty like a big boy... Anyway...

3 gun has its pluses but the known range to target is not realistic. The mtac seems well suited to 3 gun but I want something a bit less specialized.

I put a Optisan 1-4X24 on a AR and really like it! The glass is clear and reticle is simple and effective and the turrets are calibrated for 5.56 but sadly only for 55gr projectile. The price is way low to seem like it would be decent quality but for a japanese made scope it is not bad at all and it comes with a nice good quality rings/base as well. At $149 it wont break the bank either.

In the modern world of optics, under $500 is still a relatively inexpensive scope.

Just get a Leupold, and be confident you didn't make a wrong decision.

If it doesn't really matter whether it works, or lasts, get the cheapest thing you can find. That's what most people do.

If Leupold would make a true 1x, instead of 1.25x VX-R Patrol or the 1.5x Mark 4MR/T and not charge the 4-5k asking price for the Mark 6 and Mark 8 CQBSS line, I'd jump in.

From those who have them, the Mark 6/8 CQBSS line works quite well. It would be nice to see them offer another option without the high dollar tag (which rules out S&B's short dot too).

I want a true 1x magnification that will allow for shooting with both eyes open and then having the option to go to 4x for mid-range.

I was at Sportsman's Warehouse yesterday with a neighbor and got to play with the Leupold 1.25-6 on a mocked up rifle. I've never been big on the whole "tactical" lighted red dot, mil-dot anything over 4x on a FAL rifle idea (always thought it was a waste considering the rifle's standard accuracy potential), but I gotta say, I was impressed. Two eyes open on 1.25 wasn't an issue at all. I just might have to make a change.

I'm currently looking at the Falcon Optics 1.5-5x30 IR scope. SWFA sells it for less than $250.

It has got a red / green lighted reticle, MRAD adjustments for wind. & elev.and the reticle is not too cluttered up.
