Found a Belgian BAR in the lake today.

Found it about 15 feet from shore while fly fishing. It's very sad.

I'm curious if anyone has found a blued rifle in fresh water with a known period of time spent in the water.
Kinds cool to see how it never made it past the blueing in spots.

I scratched but never did find one on it....receiver was in real bad shape.
I called dispatch right after I found it who said a deputy "would probably call me"
We left and continued towards home. I got 2 voicemails as soon as I got back into reception saying they needed the weapon.
I waited for an hour down the road for a deputy to come pick it up.
This was a different county and the deputy literally had to cross the Cascade mountain range to come get it.....our county's are pretty big here.
The shift Sgt. said he had a drowning/robbery/theft unsolved in the area.
They gave me a property slip in case the weapon magically doesn't pop hot.
Altho a very interesting find and conversation piece I don't know if I would drive 125 mountain miles to go get it.

Nice find, Jeffery!

It would be super cool if that thing could help solve a cold case of some sort.

Don't worry. That rifle did not feed right and had stripped threads. I just got tired of working on it and threw it into the pond, if only to feel better!!

It's not in that bad of shape. Soak it in solvent for a few weeks and most of the rust should fall off.

That bolt looks good.

Barrel Not so good.

So all those posts over the years about people losing their guns in tragic boating accidents are TRUE!

Since it is already yours, they can legally mail it to you. That is assuming that it is not stolen.

if you get it back ........ do not start scraping & scrubbing, you will do more harm than good

take a big enough piece of PVC pipe that it will fit into, cap & seal the bottom

you need a 12 volt dc power source,
probably could get away with a trickle charger from Harbor freight and a small 12 volt battery

put the barreled action in the pipe, fill almost to the top of the barrel with a mild alkaline solution
and place a steel rod alongside but not touching the barreled action

rig a circuit with a 12 volt light bulb between the steel rod & the positive clamp of the trickle charger
and then clamp the negative clamp to the muzzle of the barrel

this is basically the same process that the Smithsonian uses to rejuvenate most ferrous metal items that need saved

chances are that you might even be able to shoot it and hit something smaller than a aircraft carrier

the electrolytic alkaline process changes the rust back to parent metal without destroying it

Odd that it's a barreled action. What happened to the wood? I doubt it rotted off already if bluing is still showing. They still pick up wood stocks off of Galipoli. Worm eaten though.

I wonder if it was someone's project that wouldn't work.

I'd give electrolysis a shot.

There's a guy over on Calguns that has a completely (and I do mean completely) rusted 1911 that he's been running the electrolysis on for a couple of weeks now. He's had amazing progress. It'd be worth a try. Still need a new barrel, either that or you'd have a great wall hanger with a story. Or maybe a lamp stand.
