Boot reporting aboard.
My soft spot has always been for the M14, but there's no denying that the FAL (as T48) handily beat out the T44 (which was adopted as the M14), or that the FAL was far more popular world-wide. I've only fired an FAL a few times, but the comfort was impressive (sadly they had the AWB thumbhole stock), but I'm well and truly bitten by the FAL bug. My No.1 want is a para, but there's this pesky money thing... In the meantime, reading and learning...

Why?
'Cause *real men* don't shoot anything that don't start with a 7 and end with a .62 ! ![]() In reality; Ergonomics Soldier-proof common and major caliber easy ta spin one up from bits'n'pieces Finally...the quality and intelligence as well as the taste and acumen displayed by proponents of the rifle..as exhibited by most of the members here! ![]() While I wish I could say that I've never seen a dumphuk with an FAL; I've shore seen waaay too many of 'em with poodle-shooters and a couple other types of rifles/carbines.

Cause they are the best.
They are the best 7.62 x 51 rifle for the money. Don't bring your M1A/M14 BS into this. It won't float. 90 countries didn't use an M14. The M14 will never be as robust and as simple as the FAL. So there you go. I said it, The FAL is the best.

U name it, i've shoot it , from 22s on up, was a long time nra ar 15 shooter, got my first fal, never looked back, learned to build them, shoot them etc. Theres just something about the feeling u get when u let off some 308s, it unlike shooting anything else, they always draw a crowd , everyone wants one.

We all have two things in common - a--holes & opinions. I know one of them varies greatly; don,t know about the other. So there you go. I say it, the FAL is "not" the best but neither is the M14. That is my personal opinion! |

It's simple really, in '75 when I was packing a PIG and doing crosstraining with the ADF 3rd Brigade I got to shoot the L1A1 and the L2A1. The feel, fit and function was excellent. I got the pig 'cuz the M16A1 sucked. I grew up shooting .30+ cal. ammo. I never bought an AR until '08.

The FAL is more like a '67 GTO, '68 Camaro or '70 Trans Am. Take your pick. Plenty of power, easy to wrench on and will last nearly forever if you keep the oil changed.

I wanted a robust .308 rifle. I did some research and decided on the fal. The more I shoot it and tinker with it, the more I'm glad I decided on the fal. The more I learn about it from people on here, the more I like it. I've had AR's and AK's, but I'd grab the fal any day!

Like US kids growing up with visions of fighting men carrying the M16, I grew up in South Africa seeing the distinctive, classy and yet deadly silhouette of the FAL.
I later carried an R1 in the SADF during the later stages of the bush-war, but I never dreamed I'd actually get to own one. Oddly enough, I carried its arch-enemy, the AK47, in Iraq - and now I own one of those as well, but the FAL to me will always be a man's battle-rifle. |

Dead wrong - you "Dilletante". You guys love FALs; I just happen to like the looks of a few of them; mostly the t48s ( one of my top ten rifles of all time -- for looks ).
Am I glad the FAL wasn,t adopted for US service -- you betcha! There were better systems available @ the time, which anyone w/an open mind could or can figure out. What I do like about the FAL is the eye appeal of a few types that look wonderful hanging on the wall, which makes them great conversation pieces. But when it comes down to shooting, I choose to take out better performers & leave the FALs hanging. However I do consider the t48 to be a US martial arm despite its not being adopted. Hello the camp! I knew of FALs only in passing: had read of and could identify, maybe, in a dimly lit room. That changed when an amigo whose opinion I respected claimed it was the best MBR extant, for many of the reasons already put forth.
He had up-front-and-personal experience with arms from snoop-n-poop action during the Asian unpleasantness and involvement with children in action. Bottom line, I came, I saw, I built and sold all my Colts and built some more. mm

Because it was good enough to be America's battle rifle to replace the Garand if not for the military wanting a U.S.-made rifle.
Love the adjustable gas system, when tuned in it makes for quicker follow-up shot than other .308 rifles I've owned (HK91, M1A, AR10). Its silhouette is pure art.

Quite true because anyone who has served knows the military is resistant to change; esp radical change. At the time the US military saw no need for clip-loaded rifles as they; as always, stressed marksmanship above all else. That is one of several reasons we whipped the Spanish in 1898 using mostly 45-70s & some Krags against 93 Mausers; arguably the finest military rifle of the day. However the Navy & Marines did have the Mod 1895 Win-Lee straight-pull which was way ahead of its time in several respects. Last edited by brunop; July 08, 2012 at 18:59. |

So you're saying there were better weapons systems available, but the US adopted an inferior system instead of those or the FAL.
