Opinions Neede: Ruger 1911 v Remington 1911
The local shop has the Ruger 1911 and the Remington 1911 side by side under the glass case. The Ruger is $630 and the Remington is $660.It looks as if the Ruger has a few more upgraded features. Which one is the better pistol? Accuracy? Reliability?
All input is deeply appreciated. Jarhead504 |

SIG 1911 GSR. If the choice needs to be a little less $$$, Springfield Armory.

i like the ruger, stainless steel. i have shot the remington and it was everything you expect from a base model 1911 and i have not shot a ruger. that being said........ I WANT A RUGER SR1911
as far as everything else goes, they are probably equal. i just love stainless pistols. ok looks like remington too has a stainless version that was recently released, the remington is series 80 like and the ruger is series 70 like but with titanium firing pin and stronger firing pin spring. the series 70 style guns usually have a nicer trigger pull. so imho the ruger still wins out. ok now you guys can flame me for being a fan of ruger firearms........ Features, especially sights, Beavertails, beveled mag wells, trigger pull an such would decide for me. Checkered frame and mainspring housing are nice touches.
Not a fan of oversized mag releases, or extended slide stops and safety's. The Remy is a pretty basic 1911, so I'd probably go with the Ruger. Does the Ruger have Novak's like this one? Big plus in my book. I'd probably put a bigger dot front sight on it however. http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/201...-ruger-sr1911/ Yep, I'd take the Ruger and use the extra $30 for a Wilson Combat 47D 8 rd mag. Accuracy and reliability would be about equal in these pistols. Neither of them is handfitted or equipped with "Match" componets that I can determine. Probably as much difference between individual pistols as between brands. You might get a peach or a lemon with either. Good luck with that!

As both Ruger and Remington are relative late-comers on the 1911 scene, I really don't know a lot about either, in terms for reputation for quality. Are the slides forged or cast? How is quality control? I know both companies have had past issues, including those with Remington after the Freedom Arms acquisition.
Unfortunately, most mainstream gun magazines do reviews which don't really give the reader the important facts. I would want to know how good the manufacturing process is. If it's a well-made steel slide and frame, you can build up from there and replace parts you don't like with quality aftermarket items from companies like Ed Brown, Wilson, and Les Baer. But if you've got a pistol that's been cast, in a half-assed manner, with mediocre grade steel, you're just throwing your money away. |

I'd buy the Ruger plus $630 is a very fair price for one brand new at a gunshop.

Good timing on this thread, as I'm also deciding between the two. Whichever one will be my first 1911.
From what I've read, they're both are supposed to be a pretty good intro pistols to 1911's. I'm probably going to go with the Remington R1 because it has more GI styling than the Ruger SR1911 yet still retains upgraded/bigger sights. My local shop sold their last Remington R1 so I'm just waiting for him to get another. I'm pretty excited for my first 1911!

IMHO if I were to buy a "cheap" first 1911, I would get a springfield armory, at least their frames and slides are forged, and if the made in brazil bothers you the NM marked ones say made in USA,
FYI C&S usesx springer base model to build their pistols on. If I had to choose between a ruger and remmy I'd hve to choose the remmington MY .02 |

I bought a Springfield Armory 1911A1 new in 1987, when I was a 20 year old Lance Corporal in the Marine Corps. I've had it all these years, and it's gone through a couple of front sights, had some small parts replaced with Ed Brown's and Bill Wilson's, but she's been a workhorse and has never failed me.

Ruger casts just about every frame they make, so my bet is it is cast. Not that should matter much, they make good stuff. I will agree with other posters, my Springfield milspec has been in my possession for about 20 yrs now, no complaints. I also own a S&W 1911, no complaints other than blue was a little thin.

Google Ruger and Caspian. They aren't totally new to 1911s.
