Food storage costs

Is it me, or are MRE's and freeze dried food costs going out of sight? Not to long ago, a case of MRE's cost me $70.00. Now they are around $90.00.
#10 cans seems to be 10-20% higher than a year ago.

Gouging, or legitimate price increases?

Edited to add even water containers look to have increased by 10-15%.

I'm guessing a combination of inflation due to loose monetary policy and supply/demand. The end of the world is nigh, its 2012 dontcha know? Peeps is stokcing up.

Have ya been to the grocery store????

Just about everything has gone up.The cost of fuel affects everything.

I did just get a decent buy on R134A,but other than that, tires, parts, oil, brake fluid, antifreeze, etc, are all higher than they were a couple years ago.

And of course mt taxes, insurance, and health insurance have all steadily climbed as well. But no worries,my retirement is growing at the stellar rate of less than 1 friggin percent.

I'm sure things will get better soon though.............

Do you have a link to the storyline regarding this?

I've heard it also but have yet to see the solid details of who (Feds, States, etc) is doing the buying.
I know that there are quite a few internet rumors, as always, as to the reasoning behind the possible stockpiling of food. Just looking for the facts.

Folks laughed at 411 dude for saying this a couple years back and now they're acting surprised. Go figure. I laughed too but am not surprised.

As for increased food costs verses lack of product, it's doubtful either are the factor. You go on any website whether it be news sites or gun sites and you'll see a certain freeze dried food company shamelessly advertising everywhere. Safe bet to say they're raking in the dough these past couple years. After '08 ammo was a hot commodity and people paid ridiculous amounts for it. This year it's food I guess.

I don't have a link, but I remember getting e-mails from,IIRC,Emergency Essentials about being out of Mountain House cans because of US gov contracts.

I just did a quick google search and didn't find anything, and the cans are available now.All I ever heard was the gov buying it-lots of conspiracy theories, but I never heard an actual reason either.

Probably filling a mountain or mine with food and supplies for the ruling class in case something happens. Then after we are done killing each other/dying off, they can come out and start over again.........

The world population went from 6 billion to 7 billion in 13 years. At that rate how long will we as a planet survive. How much food can we produce? The third world will look to the west to solve this problem by using our tax money to buy our food and then ship it over seas to people who are living 200 years in the past.

dollar cost averaging.

Buy your normal groceries. Just a few more of the storable items. First, since it is regular consumption items, you'll better rotate it (took me years to get rid of my Y2K powdered milk). Second, costs will go up and down but you'll be paying a little at a time at an overall average price. MUCH easier than deciding one day "I'm going to buy my food storage"

No rumor on gov't contracts for Mountain House. I personally know the chief engineer for package development at Oregon Freeze Dry (parent co. and largest freeze drier in the U.S. at 20M kgs/annum). He attended my MSC meeting last month and said they are running 24/7/364 (Christmas), and they can't fill all the orders. Not just the U.S. government - many governments.

If you want their food, buy it where you find it. Because it is getting worse, not better.

Cheap plentiful oil gave us the ability to do that. And of course chemicals and genetics.

No guarantees that we don't end up the ones living "200 years in the past".

Excellent advice.

Expiration dates dont mean much depending on how things were stored.

Beans, rice, and tuna are cstill cheap and store easily.I use a vacuum sealer to break down large bulk purchases into eaier to work with servings (like powdered milk-I break it down into enough powder for one gallon,so when I need it,I open it up ,add water, and it's ready).
