Thumbs down Bolt Carrier Cover

My bolt carrier cover occasionally comes off my FrankenFAL during recoil. Anyone have a quick fix?

The "bolt carrier cover" or dustcover slides into internal rails machined into the inside top of the receiver. It cannot move any further forward in the receiver, and is blocked from behind by the "lower receiver" or trigger mechanism housing (THM). Normally, it's pretty stable... the Brits even used the dustcover to mount their SUIT battlefield scope, and ARMS uses a special Weaver-rail dustcover as their scopemount base.

An exception is the Canadian C1 "stripper clip" dustcover that leaves the carrier "naked" and is only about half the regular length. These are held in place by the standard Inch-pattern "tabs" on the rear of the dustcover that fit into corresponding slots in the receiver. (Metric-pattern dust covers do NOT have these tabs.) Still is usually pretty stable.

Either the dustcover rails in your receiver are too shallow, thus causing a shock such as recoil to "pop" the dustcover out of engagement... (what brand of receiver do you have?) ...OR you have a bent or damaged dust cover. My guess is probably the second cause.

Just pick up a new dustcover to probably solve your problem. They're cheap at $10 or under.

me thinkith the lips on the dust cover are not long enough to stay in the recvr rails under recoil..i had a para top cover like that,,

Easy fix: Place dust cover on a 2x4 on edge, smack with a hammer to spread the flange, reinsert the dust cover and all will be well.
