L.E.A. Silencers

I may have misled Enquiring Minds and others. In the now-locked thread about law enforcement FALs and what a bunch of puds us cops are, I said one reason few police departments use silenced weapons was expense.

Expense does not include the NFA $200 transfer tax. Governmental agencies like the local P.D. and the U.S. Marine Corps don't pay no steeenkeeeng transfer tax, but the things they buy that are regulated by NFA (full-auto weapons, silencers and probably some other stuff) ARE registered or listed by ATF, who keeps track of such stuff. Unlike you and me, governmental bodies are tax exempt.

By expensive, I meant they cost a lot to buy and maintain (labor-intensive).

A cop friend of mine who is with a nearby PD said they have a couple of those integrally silenced Ruger 22s that they bring along for night time busts when they don't want to alert anyone. He called it a "hush puppy".

I would like a suppressor to mess with but I can't work up enough enthusiasm to get past the transfer tax and paperwork. Something tells me that was the whole idea of the law in the first place!

Maybe some day when we get this country turned around, we can pick them up at the local Weapons O'War Emporium for $20 ea. Hey, I can dream, can't I???

New Orleans ( or Noilns), and the parrish it's in, have used integrally suppressed 10/22's to keep the nutria population down. The noise doesn't bother the residents and they do it at night so the soccer moms don't have to watch either. Probably a heckuva lotta fun, too.

Hey BUFF, no sweat, thanks for all the good info. I guess (non-LEO) gov't entities are wasteful enough without playing a pointless shell-game of taxing each other.

The NEXT silencer question: Why hasn't anyone ever developed a supressor for shotguns? The plastic combo shotcup/piston in modern shotshells should make a good gas seal. I'm guessing the sheer VOLUME of gases in a 12 ga. round would make the suppressor an ENORMOUS item, yes/no?

DOH!!... and they let soccer moms VOTE--spare us, Oh Lord. I like when the tree-huggers out West here try to "save" praire dogs from building construction by "relocating" them. They end up drowning/poisoning half of them by using soapy water to get them out of their tunnels, and the other half probably dies at the new site due to shock and starvation.

chet,

There's a guy here in Minnesota who's created a shotgun with a 7 foot long barrel with holes drilled at intervals. Apparently, this makes the shotgun quiet enough to be used to take crows in populated areas without annoying the soccer moms.

Since it takes some practice to get the hang of swinging a 7 foot barrel, he's developed his own flavor of tracer round so novice shooters can see where the pattern is going...

It's not exactly what you were talking about, but he HAS gotten some heat for making a "silenced" weapon. You know, for those late night, drive by, 7 foot barrel, shotgunnings you hear about all the time....

A Nutria is giant-a$$ rat, about 50 pounds, looks like a beaver without the flat tail.

I tried to buy a silenced 10/22 once, but it took so long with the paperwork (got sent back 3 times for technicalities) I gave up. Wish I had done it, they are very handy if you have varmint issues.

There WAS a "silenced shotgun shell" developed, that could be fired out of any shotgun. It consisted of a steel shotgun shell, with a small lip around the open end. The "wad" was made of a similar material. Apon firing, the wad would move forward, dispencing the shot, but would stop forward movement when it reached the "lip" at the end of the shell. All gas from the discharge would remain inside the shell.
Neat idea, though I'm not sure if they ever worked all the bugs out of the design. and each shot shell would be considered a silencer, requiring the $200 tax for each shell.

Nutria are about 15 times the size of a wharf rat. They are real similiar to a beaver w/o the tail. Destructive, too. They have beaver like teeth and will drop all your soft timber right quick. In north Louisiana, they will use old beaver ponds. Last time I got some, me and a cousin shot 6 in 10 minutes by crossfiring a pond with .22's. The biggest was about 35 lbs.
I hear that some Euro types use the pelts but we weren't up for skinnin'.
I dig up a pic somewhere.

Silencer .22's serve a LEO purpose, but not as entry guns. You say someone referred to theirs as a 'hushpuppy'? Now just how do you suppose it got that name? Suppressed .22's have been used for taking out senties; both two and four legged(the more likely non-military use). Also handy for taking out unwanted lights before a raid. They can serve a purpose in dispatching injured animals without upsetting the neighbors. .22's are effective even on deer sized critters if you can get close. I've got both a 10/22 and a Mark II pistol that are incredibly quiet. Different manufacturers, but both top drawer. Top quality stuff if fairly expensive; both of these running close to $1000 retail in stainless. For LEO work, less finely finished guns are available for half that. I have fairly effective suppressors that mount on standard AR15/M16's that wholesale at $100. Suppressed .223 is about as noisy as standard unsuppressed .22LR due to the fact that the bullet makes a loud crack since it's travelling above Mach 1. There are some very good .22 muzzle cans available for around $200 retail and they could be issued for just about any cheap .22 with a threaded barrel.

Thanks you RKIs, one and all. Very interesting stuff. I gotta read up on that 1934 NFA (alias 'Gangster Protection Act').

Please keep those nutrias confined to Louisiana! Damn, a HUGE rat with webbed feet for amphib assaults, what a nightmare! Are they a mutation caused by all the toxic chemical waste down there?
