Barrel with a "V"

A friend got a Century L1A1 that has a barrel with only one mark on it, A deeply marked small "V" in front of the barrel flat. Any Idea who made these?

That is an Australian barrel. V is the date code.

There should be a tiny crossed flags proof close to the letter marking but the proof is small and sometimes difficult to see. No other markings or serials on the Aussie barrels.

Aussie parts are known for little to no marks on them. India copied the Brits and marked every part with as many stamps as they could come up with.
