Propper way to fit a barrel to a slide
Topic says it all. Also how does one tell it the lock up is correct including the head space.
Thanks in advance. Fr. Vince |

Try The High Road's Gunsmithing forum; they've got a pretty good assortment of stickies on 1911s.
http://www.thehighroad.org/forumdisplay.php?f=16 Also check out Brownells 'How-To' articles here: http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/Gun...erarchive.aspx They've got a LOT of info on building 1911s there, starting with a box-'o'-parts!

One of Jerry Kuhnhausen's books isn't a bad investment. Even for a single gun.
More information in those books than you ever wanted to know. |

Go here Vince.
There are (at least) four separate articles on 1911 building. The basics for the question you ask is there. Kuhnhausen's books are very good. The Vol 1 for 1911's by him is indispensible. Vol 2 is nice to have. (his Garand book will drive you crazy) Headspace is not going to be the big deal as it is with our FAL building. What is a big deal is fitting the bushing-barrel-slide and then of course the barrel link has to be the right length. My recent 1911 build went pretty good all around. The barrel and bushing was bought as a matched set WITH link. My link is a little long. But I won't muddy the water for you (yet). ![]() Fun guns to build, but not for the faint of heart or the beginner. Here's some free advice: Go buy yourself some more Tupperware and leave the men's guns alone.

I fitted a Kart match barrel with hand tools (really just a special fit file and some feeler gauges). Kart sells a barrel that has pads between the tops lugs - you file the hood to length then file the pads to get equal bearing on the lower lugs and slide stop (just use a marker to check wear). The directions say it should only take about an hour but it took me a little longer, I was a little worried about screwing up a $135 barrel. I am very happy with the results and have not seen a decrease in reliability - its a win-win and really not a bad price for a quality part.
