What is the highest amount of grains per shell one can safely fire through an izzy heavy?

You talking about powder or bullet weight?

If you're talking about bullets, 168 gr. bullets work for most, but not all common .308 barrel twists. Some swear by the 155 gr. Palma bullets. I don't know what twist your Izzy barrel has, but 1/11 and 1/12 are common twists for .308 barrels.

I you're talking about powder, it depends on the one you're using, type of cases, primer, etc. Better get some loading manuals and read up on it.

Not trying to be a smart ass but, I'd suggest that you either refer to or better yet buy a good reloading manual. There are a whole lot of variables that need to be considered when loading ammo.

The manuals typically say to start at 10% below the max. loading. Remember, those manuals are proof read by lawyers, not reloaders. I've found that you can do well over 50% of the suggested loading with only minor damage to your face and arms.

it's common courtesy to let the people on either side of you know you're testing your hypervelocity cartridges

in all seriousness, FAL's were designed to be fired with standard ammo. trying to hot rod one will only put undue wear and tear on your gun and open you up to possibly hurting yourself or others. in this day and age of lawsuits, i'd be vary careful. the guy next to you gets injured b/c of your hot rods will walk off with your house, guns, car and wife.

regards,
caspian

There are old reloaders and there are bold reloaders. There are no old bold reloaders! One of the gun rags did a test a few years ago on how much extra powder it would take over factory listed max to actually blow a gun up. In some cases it was only 2 or 3 grains of powder, 62 grains of IMNR 4350 was enough to blow a 30/06 if I remember. Be very careful, especially with semi autos. You only increase powder fouling, contribute to significant throat and bore erosion, and put yourself and everybody else at risk with overloads.
