rifle selection help needed
I'm trying to pick up a matched caliber set of rifles before the possible ban after the next election.
I've gotten it down to 3 possible calibers, 7.62x54R, (7.62 Russian) 7.92x57 (8mm Mauser) and 7.62x63 (.30-'06). I need to find a bolt and a Semi in the same caliber, both rifles have to be able to take bayonets so that counts out all commercial rifles. the bolt actions will be scoped, the semis need high capacity Choices are: Finish Mosin Nagant, $250 - $350 7.62 Russian PSL, $750 - $1000 7.62 Russian inexpensive ammo, easy to find not the most accurate guns unless you hand load. expensive magazines, cheap stripper clips M24/47 Mauser, $99 - $139 8mm Mauser FN-49 Egypt contract , $600 - $1200 cheap ammo, kind of difficult to find extremely accurate no magazines available, cheap stripper clips 03A3 Springfield, $600 - $800 .30-'06 M1 Garand $600 - $1000 .30-'06 slightly expensive ammo, easy to find good condition guns are very hard to find but it is possible to rebuild with new or lightly used parts. deadly accurate at any distance but the recoil is a problem for quick shots. cheap enbloc clips, cheap stripper clips. out of these three sets which would you suggest?

I would get:
03A3 Springfield, $600 - $800 .30-'06 M1 Garand $600 - $1000 .30-'06 You must be kidding about the ammo. 30/06 Greek is about 50% cheaper than 7.62 at the moment. |

im comparing the price to the other listed ammo, 7.62x54R and 7.92x57
and 7.62x51, anything is cheaper that that. my only problem with the Garand is the fact its 8 rounds. but the enbloc clips are a hell of a lot cheaper than mags and easier to carry. i can get the Garand for $695 plus $50 ship, transfer, and call in right now, or $595 in 3 - 4 months from CMP. Springfield 03a3 C Stock drill rifles are $250 plus the same $50 would have to add on $40 for the bolt, $135 for the barrel, and around $50 for the re-barrel and headspace.

last one i did was a drill rifle, came out just fine.
i can hit DOW and get a full action for $300, ($1200 for a 03A4 action) then ill need to get everything else for the rifle. the Finns are frighteningly accurate, seen a guy doing steel plates at 500 yards with one using a PE scope. the PSLs hang around 2 - 5 MOA depending on ammo.

I have, or have had, all of these except the PSL - I'd say 03A3 and M1. Availability of parts, gunsmithing, ammo, reloading stuff, and man, that '03 bolt works smooth. There's an old Weaver K4 and a set of 'A3 mounts waiting for when my eyes get even worse. Lack of a detachable mag on the M1 is not a problem, a good man on an M1 can pretty well keep up with a higher capacity rifle. You never have to remove an empty mag and do something with it, sometimes you don't even have to close the bolt, you're working on the top of the rifle instead of the bottom, there are more I can't think of right now. And, it's a by-gosh M1 GARAND, comes with Mom & Apple Pie attachments, you can sit with it in your lap let your mind wander.
'Course, my mind wanders anyway. |

add one more just to mix it up a bit.
Converted M24/47 Mauser $300 7.62x51 FN FAL $700 - $1500 7.62x51 easy to find ammo but expensive as hell accurate with most ammo cheap magazines

My Finn M39 with CZ light ball holds under 2 MOA for 5 rounds. The PSL is no M1 though and seems waaayyy over priced to me for a bulked up AK (I like AKs, own several, but not at $650 a shot!). I still want a PSL but I want a lot of things....
The 308/762 conversion mentioned is a good thought but since I shoot a Garand and a 03A3 I am going with that combo. To quote Townsend Whelen "the 30-06 is never a mistake." You could load plinking led bullets in 03 for light fun and shoot surplus in the Garand for blazing away (and use the round/rifle that saved eveyone's asses in WWII). |

I'd go with the .30-06 rifles, or the 7.62 x 51 mm pair. Both IMO are much higher quality choices than the rest.

Don't forget the Hakim in 8mm either. Also, I've seen both the FN49 and Hakim use converted magazines for higher capacity (BAR for the FN and MG15? for the Hakim).
And BTW, I don't think that K98 chargers work with the FN49. I remember that standard 8mm chargers push down into the magazine. I'm not sure what the Hakim uses for chargers. |

Go with the Springfield and M1. Parts are cheap and available, clips don't wear out, and .30-06 is still the most widely loaded round from 110-grain bullets to 220-grain bullets.
