Best muzzle device for a FAL
I need to add another compliance part to my build. I am thinking about replacing the imbel muzzle device with a new US made one. I am not to familiar with FAL parts. What kind of a device would forum members recommend. Does a FAL need a brake to control recoil?

I have never shot a fal. My G3 clone has some hefty muzzle climb though.

+1 Andy.
![]() For an almost identical combo device that is US made you could check out Gunplumbers well crafted handiwork or try this one http://www.dsarms.com/prodinfo.asp?number=002D The belgian short is a fine design. "You don't need no stinking muzzle brake!"

It all depends on what you need it to do.
First...It's a left hand thread. If you want faster follow up shots and like to watch the FUDDS at the range wince every time you fire......Get a brake. The DSA and Entreprise brakes are probably the most effective. Both in braking action and dispersing FUDDS. As far as flash hiders.....The Combo device you have is quite effective as a flash hider. And does perform a minor braking action. Remember that flash suppression is both for the shooters eyes at night and not revealing your position in the dark. The ammo you use/barrel length is also going to effect how effective the flash suppression is. An FSE/Gunplumber US Combo device is a very good choice. IMHO anyway........

I would not mind having an FSE combo device, but they are no longer listed on the FSE web site. Are they available elsewhere?

Get the DSA FH listed above, and try one of these while you're shopping http://www.dsarms.com/prodinfo.asp?number=123
I have one, haven't tried it yet though. They must've made them for a reason, right? |

none for sale but just look for a jerry miculek style ...these type have been around for 20 years or more ...pretty common for weapons here ...hand guns and rifles ...my .45 comp is almost identica ....
rule of thumb ...gotta have surface area for the gas to pushagainst and holes big enough to supply the gas ,with a larger internal chamber for the gas to expand ..and finally a exit hole no more than .008 over ..is the way to go ....combo units are just for looks and lightening the wallet ...go to wilson combat ...have a look there ...ya wont find anything like this here ..... |

There are several variants, plus there is the option of a nekkid muzzle.
I have found the muzzle devices all influence the grouping ability of the weapon to some degree. Most also have some function as a flash hider. I have taken the time to test all of the different muzzle devices I owned with my FAL's and picked the muzzle devices that produced the least affect on the groups. They were not the same devices, as I found each FAL "preferred" a different device. BTW - I have two of these I no longer use (from DS Arms).

Re: Best muzzle device for a FAL
Quote:
The FAL is a generally a very heavy rifle, chambered in a mid-power .30 caliber cartridge. Much of the recoil is absorbed by the mass of the heavy rifle before it can be inflicted on the shooter. There are only a few valid reason why recoil should be an issue with a FAL: 1. You are using a straight comb stock and iron sights, and the rifle just does not "fit your face." You have to scrunch your face down in an awkward manner to get a sight picture. Any time you hold he rifle incorrectly, you are asking to be punished. 2. You are using a "recoil amplifier" muzzle devices. Generally, the "short Belgian combo device" (and copies thereof) have the worst reputation for recoil amplification - this due to the forward facing ports that generate more rearward push as the bullet exits the device. Not every rifle so-equipped demonstrates this "amplified recoil." I'm not sure why there is this inconsistency. 3. You are shooting some contrived burn-as-much-ammo-as-fast-as-you-can competition. The guys with devices that reduce muzzle climb will have enough advantage to outscore you if the outcome of the contest is dependent upon who can obtain multiple hits on small targets in the time allowed. 4. You are of very small stature. Consider a smaller rifle. If you only weigh 100 pounds, or you are shorter than five feet in height, a FAL is a bit much rifle. I haven't bought one yet, but I see a Vortex muzzle device in my future. These devices have an excellent reputation for flash suppression, and I have heard no complaints about them contributing to excessive muzzle-blast, or "enhancing" recoil in any manner. They are a bit spendy though. Edited to add a fifth factor. 5. You are shooting from a supported position (sitting or prone), and using a very tight sling. Those positions will usually give you a strong dose of punishiment.

The US Made Short Combo from ARS is a good part. I have one and like it, plus it still looks 100% "FAL".

go to www.akconcepts.com and check the video of the comp they sell for the FAL pretty good, then watch the one handed full auto....wow... But a VORTEX will kill flash like you wouldn't believe. On the 240H it was killed even wearing NVG's at 700 rds a minute.

2SAV and the others,
You should really check out the brakes Ed Vanden Berg does at his shop. He can do standard and heavy barrels, left and right hand threads, metric and imperial threads, etc. Brakes look as good as they perform. You can see some of them on his site.... http://www.vandenbergcustom.com/Cont...FALs/Page.html You can see both the standard side and the heavy (bottom) at the above link. They are worth looking into before you purchase something you may not be too happy with.

I happen to like the original DSA brake on my medium weight barreled SA58 for fast and accurate followup shots (the weight does help too).
I also like it quite well as Fudd repellant. Also lets me shoot quick aimed fire, make pretty paper, and irritate stodgy range masters as I do so.My other 2 FAL's wear combo devices. Those rifles fit different roles. -FNR. |

Well, Mike, glad you so "nicely" asked about the 2 other FAL's which happen to wear combo devices...in my "arsenal"...SIC. Sorry that I couldn't get back to you sooner, because I work a "day" job...and a small business or two besides.
I've moved into middle age here, and have been thinking and acting on what sort of "legacy" that I'd like to leave to my heirs. I've had a couple grandparents pass away in the last couple of years, and this has prompted my thoughts in the matter. I happen to like shooting "military" pattern rifles...FAL's, M1A's, Garands, Mausers, Enfields, SKS's, HK's, et al. I even hunt with some of 'em... Got that from a Korean war vet uncle who always used a bone stock 1903A3 when I was growing up. Another uncle (a WWII 3rd Armored Division vet) usually deer hunted with a Garand. My own father deer hunted for many years with an Enfield "Jungle Carbine" very successfully, and was once able to literally shoot the head off of a pheasant with it. I bagged my first deer, a big WV 8 point with that same, historically accurate Enfield when I was 12 years old. I keep a 1908 Carl Gustav model 96 Swedish Mauser out of the safe as a "ready" rifle here. It's been occasionally needed (I live the rural life) here, for pest control...two summers ago it downed a rabid fox, for instance. Coyotes are getting fairly common here, too. It's in my "arsenal"...any objections from you? How about the ancient Remington Model 10 pump action 12 gauge? Or, the Stevens Springfield side by side 20 gauge shotgun that I inherited from my grandfather? Or, the unmolested No.4 MkI LongBranch Enfield? The 9422 XTR Winchester? Maybe its the Kimber 1911, the Glock 27, and the Browning HighPower that bother you? The 3 FAL's that I own are a joy to shoot. I will take great satisfaction in being able to pass along two of them that are "correct" in as many respects as possible, to the family heirs who I believe will most enjoy them. The muzzlebrake'd DSA medium barreled FAL is just too danged accurate as it sits, to monkey around with. I like it like it is, it's a great target rifle. But, it's too heavy for me to tote around these mountains as a hunting rifle... my hunting style is to move, sit a bit, then move on... The 50.00 and the carbine FAL's are lighter. I sometimes pick them up, and walk off into the woods to hunt with. Why not? I have a couple 5 round mags for them, no more "evil" than the next guy's commercial BAR. Do the combo devices bother you? They don't bother me. They definitely can help me when I'm using my generation 2 night sight for hunting coyotes, though. BTW, the State of NC has no problem with any of this, either. I might just as often walk into the woods with the Swedish Mauser, the Enfield, the Savage Model 10 Tactic bolt action, or even the Remington 700 Sendero. Maybe you like the "managed" preserve and shooting blind style of hunting yourself, huh? Note to self: STFU. When I pass down those 3 FAL's to the next generation, they will each be accompanied by a full, unmolested case of Portuguese Ball. A selected heir will get all the parts, tooling, manuals, etc to keep those 3 rifles going for a long, long time. It's my job to make sure that the rifles are ready for them. It doesn't take an Einstein to see that the next generations of our children and grandchildren probably won't have the choices which we enjoy. By the way, I've seen a lot of muzzlebrakes installed on boltaction rifles in the last 10 years or so, too. Am I offended when I shoot next to one? No, not at all. I'm wearing proper safety equipment, not that 50 cent pair of foam earplugs so many people have to buy from the target range because they've never realized that they needed protection. Do I get offended when I target shoot a bolt action rifle, and the shooter next to me is shooting an M1A in "rapid aimed fire" mode? No, because I often do this with my FAL's. (I've seen a few inexperienced rangemasters get their panties in a wad about it, though...) One of the most impressive shooters that I've ever seen, was shooting a No.4 MkI Enfield in "rapid aimed fire" in a very smooth, polished, efficient, practiced manner; and his 100 yard target proved that he definitely knew what he was doing. Poetry in motion. Nah, I like hearing the "Sound of Freedom." I worry far more when I sometimes see "hunters" come onto the firing line with their brand new "latest and greatest gotta-have-it magnum" rifle and "A" box of ammunition, post a target at 50 yards, somehow get the thing on paper, run out of ammunition, and pack it up, saying to their friends, "now it's ready for next week's hunt." They live right next door to the many AR15 shooters that I saw at the same range that I shot at for 17 years, who would show up time after time after time, and NEVER shoot their rifles beyond 50 yards. Often, by their own spoken words. I don't know you, Mike, so I'm going to abstain from make any rash judgements against you and YOUR "arsenal." I hope that you don't mind. Peace Out, FNR.
