Non matching kit question

Hi group,
I have the chance to pick up a Romy kit cheap that is non number matching. Am I going to have a harder time with the build as compared to a matching number kit? I seem to remember something to do with headspacing....
Thanks in advance!

It isn't any different than building a "matching number kit", just be sure to check the headspace before you cook off the first live round (I check them all regardless if the kit matches or not).

There are several techniques to check the headspace on a rifle, but if you are going to build a few I would suggest you invest in some good gauges.

Brownells sells Manson gauges for $28.00 each. You need 2 - 1 "Go" and 1 "No-go".
Item numbers are:
513-100-490 for the "Go" gauge and
513-100-491 for the "No-go" gauge.

Ive read some of the go adn no go gauges don't work well for 7.62X39. They were using the go guages as the nogo guage and something else for the go guage. I just always used a live round in there and see how it chambered, adn checked how it fit. So far i havn't had any problems.

You might want to try using snap caps or pull the bullet from the live round, dump the powder and replace it

Its not good when a live round goes off by mistake!

IMHO, the only things that MIGHT cuase a kaboom would be if the barrel and trunion arent matching, but almost %100 of kits have atleastthose two matching, other than that, all the other parts are basically the same dimensions on all AK(like the bolt, carrier, whatnot) but the barrel pin cutout is not always going to be in the same EXACT spot, and that will be what affects headspace.

I bought a no-go gauge, and use a live round for the "go" gauge, but I do my checking before the hammer is installed to make it more safe.

Matchin' numbers on a Romanian kit just means that they only used one hammer ta beat it togetther with,.... and that it was delivered in the donkey cart which was assigned to the hammer bearer.

Don't sweat it. It makes about as much sense as expectin' matchin' numbers on a bucket of horse shoes.

Headspace like normal with your gauges. If you do have to adjust haedspace it will be from where the barrel is pressed in. Initially check the hole to see if barrel and trunion holes line up. when they start to appear very close and install the bo go gauge with the bolt and then the set up with the go gauge. Bolt closes on the no go and you will be doing some barrel presing, If it closes on the go gage you are almost there. You can now insert you barrel pin form the side of the trunnion
