IVs How Do You Legaly Purchase?

Hey all, I'm coming to the end of my second tour in the sandbox. I'm a cavalry scout with combat lifesaver training. What is necissary to purchase IV bags, needles, etc. in the civilian world? Also can you get the blood expander type or just the saline solution? I appreciate any help. Well gotta go clean my weapon again, damn sand storms! Thanks

I want to thank you for your service to this country.
I am sorry I can not help with your question as I have never considered giving an IV

US Drug Laws

I want to also thank you for your service.

AFAIK, IV solutions and associated equipment can only be purchased with a prescription. If you can find a doctor that will issue you one, then they can write it for whatever you want. Most pharmacys would probably have to order it unless you go to a pharmacy in a hospital.

If you are able to accomplish that, be sure and keep a copy of the prescription with the gear. LEOs can detain and possibly arrest you for "possesion of drug paraphanalia" or some such obscure law. At least that is the case in the PRK. Any reasonable LEO, after you explained your reasons would probably not do so but you just might run into the single jerk that wants a promotion and arrests everybody for everything.

I also hate to tell you this but only use it on yourself or family as using it on strangers could also land you in legal/liability trouble. It is called "practicing medicine without a license". You could save someone's life and they might still sue you. I retired after 25 years as a Paramedic in Los Angeles and I KNOW it is true, unfortunately.

Good luck and happy homecoming!

Let me preface this with "I might be wrong." I think that with your training you will be able to purchase certain items not usually available to the public. IV catheters are somewhat easily obtained and do not require a prescription of any sort. You may have to jump through a few hoops, e.g. EMT training, before you can get them but I doubt it. Google "medical supplies" and I'm sure you will find lots of info.
Thank you for your service and have a safe trip home.

Get a veterinary supply catalog. It is the same stuff.

I had a dog who had kidney failue and dialyzed him for a good 2 years until he got too sick and had to be put down. I ordered ringers, hypos and the tubing from the same place, can't remember the name. The box of 25 ringers was bout $50.

Thanks for all the great info. I've heard about the "Good Samaritan" clause but it's different laws in different states. I'll have to look into EMS certification and voluntering when I get back anyway just to "help out". It's so frustrating being out here when you'd rather be helping our own back in the states with all the stuff going on.

Sorry, kinda got off track. It's great info. I appreciate it. Just looking for a way to be able to use this training for some good when i'm out instead of just putting the knowledge on a shelf.

Thanks all.
