Shorten barrel on FrankenFal
I have a Century built FrankenFal that I want to shorten the barrel, add back a U.S. made short brake or flash hider, and recrown with a better crown. Can anyone tell me what size I need to drill out the gas port to for a 17" or 18" barrel? Does anyone know where to get a good short muzzlebrake or flash hider, and where can I rent the tools to rethread the barrel for one?
Oh yeah the newbie question of the week, This thing has a grenade launcher sight attached to the gas plug? on the front of the gas tube. I have directions for removing the normal style plug, but can anyone tell or point me to info on how to remove this thing? I'll need it off (along with the gas piston and front sight) to access the gas port. Thanks in advance!

You need to depress the plunger on the gas plug and turn it to the 6 o'clock position.
The plunger can be a bitch. After ripping a couple of fingernails loose, I now use a flat-tip scredriver to mash the plunger. I admire your WECSOG initiative in trying to thread the barrel yourself. Truly if you want anything more than a bare muzzle, you may regret not sending the barrel to somebody with a lathe, who can do it absolutely right. Mr. Bonecrusher did a real fine (and real fast) job on one of mine. See http://www.falfiles.com/forums/showt...hreadid=147419 If you wanna go with a nekkid muzzle, you just need a dremel (or a hacksaw), a file and some sandpaper. I'm doing this exact project on a buddy's Century FAL. It was a bare muzzle barrel that I cut off at 17", recrowned and then threaded, while still on the receiver. I used one of FAL Filer BoxofRocks' Phoenix Flash hiders.
During many searches of the Files, I found others had opened the gasport between .116 and .120. I drilled my project at .116 for now and will test fire it before going any bigger. As for muzzle threading, you could try a WTBorrow/Rent add in the Marketplace or Georgia Hometown forum. I bought my own threading set-up and have used it on four barrels, so far. ![]() The grenade sight gas plug works basically the same as the others. First fold the sight all the way forward, flat out over the front of the barrel,. Press in the button, and rotate the gas plug.

I think .016 is a little small as the normal gas hole is .098, I would try .109 first.
