I'm not sure when they used those flash hiders, but when I was in Venezuela (sorry, probably spelled that wrong again) in 2000 all I saw was paratrooper (folders) with Imbel combo devices. They still look cool though. Skull!!

Welll actually they are kinda like the Stoll in that it doesn't matter where they time up.
In the Blake Stevens book it shows it timed kinda in between. p.231 & 232

If you have ever tried to time a brake on different STG barrels you will notice that it times differently on each barrel (at least in my numerous experiences)
I came to the assumption that they did not bother timing the threads on the STG's

Also according to the book this Flashider was on the 1954 original version.
Which by the way was in 7 x 49.15 (7 mm 'Liviano') "Liviano" meaning light in spanish
Also say's they only ordered 5000 rifles and some of those were heavy barrels
It does not break down the percentage of each type.
These had T 48 style handguards and a unique rear sight all wood furniture.
They then switched to 7.62 nato and the more well know combo flashider.

Fal grunt, I'll be able to make more upon request so no worry's!

Thanks for all the kind words!

I had the same problem until I put a wrap of .052 safety wire around the front groove on the Vortex, works great and didn't diminish functioning at all.

Pm incoming. Has anyone ever seen one of the rear sights anywhere? I'm looking for a new project, this would be a fun one if teh sights and early handguards could be located.

Nice looking copy your've made there Moses, I'll have to get one off of you to add to the collection as I don't think I'll see an orginal for sale any time soon

Here's what the sight looks like, they do come up for sale on eBay from time to time. But your looking at in excess of $120 for one.

The flash eliminator isn't 'timed' it's just screwed on tight, there's no need to have it timed to a position.

Actually we (CMP Armory) tested one on a 15" barrel short gas system FAL we made (16" with FH) and it worked great, no flash on an overcast day.
Using Chilean and Port ammo.

Does the rear of the muzzle device overlap the barrel like a Imbel? If so, ho much? Can you post a pic of the device mounted on a barrel? Thanx.

Mojo, from the pics it does not look like the FH slips over the barrel much at all. Maybe 1/4" beyond the threads would be my guess.

Well, if you don't want it to blast dust up in your face when shooting prone, you better time it. Just like a G1 or L1A1 flash-hider. Right?

No, timing only applieswhen you want a specific "prong" or flash opening orientation. For example, M16 A2 FHs have a wide prong or area of no flash opening. This needs to be timed to be at the bottom or 6 o'clock position, obviously. The Ven. FH is perfectly symmetrical, so theoretically there's no difference. I personally would probably time it so that the "triangle" formed by the prongs was vertical strictly for appearance sake. There isn't going to be much difference in the dust signature no matter how it's oriented.

Is not the M16 flash hider perfectly symmetrical also? It's hard for me to believe that having a prong on the bottom of the M16 matters, but having the prong on the bottom of the Venezulean doesn't. Just becuase the m16's hider has one wider prong than the rest doesn't mean that the prongs on the Venezuelean have no affect.

So, in summary, I can see Three reasons to time the Venezuelan flash hider, just as one should time other FAL (and M16) flash hiders:

1. Aesthetics

2. To resist muzzle climb

3. To reduce muzzle blast in the dirt

Now, in order to prove myself right, I guess I'll just have to get one for testing

There's a difference. The A2 hider is assymetric, there is only one wide prong, so gas dispersion is also asymetric, there is a downward force on the muzzle with the hider timed. The Ven FH is symmetric, all prongs evenly spaced, the same width. There is no assymetric gas dispersion to generate a force in one direction, so no effect on muzzle rise. The Ven prongs are pretty narrow, and there is gas dispersion 60 deg downward, so there's probably not a huge effect on dust signature. Truth is, it's probably more fun to "what if", but in the real world, most of us are going to time 'em just as you say - for aesthetic reasons

Mojo, it covers almost 1/2 inch of the barrel below the threads.

It covers .900 of the barrel total. (almost an inch)

I reckon you can stick a flat blade screwdriver between the prongs and torque it down that way. I used this same method on Stg FHs.

Use your hand with a rubber jar lid remover or use a metal object between the prongs.
It doesn't take much to keep it tight!
