I believe the newer S&W 629's do have a stronger, or more durable frame, wither they are of a different alloy or slightly beefier I don't know, just something I read or heard somewhere . This was around 1990 with the -4 and -5 variations.

I don't think three tiny 3-56 holes will weaken a 629 frame to any extant making it dangerous. I definitely would purchase the "Plug" screws" to cover the holes. I am very particular about my 29 and 629.
