Sudafed limit

This is probably not news to many.

Be advised, the limit on the amount of product containing pseudoephedrine is now so low,
that JUST ONE PACKAGE will put you at the limit.

You cannot buy two packages containing anything with pseudoephedrine in a single day.

That means:
one 24-pack of Sudafed
or
one 15 pack of Claritin

I knew the goobermint set a new rule, but this is fugking ridiculous.

No more than 3.6 grams pseudoephedrine per day,
and no more than 9.0 pseudoephedrine in a month!

I tried to buy two different types of pseudoephedrine meds today, and was denied.
Dingbat at the counter could not explain the limits, and instead told me the limit was because I might "mix" the medications and overdose. That really lit my fuse, and we had words.

Anyhow, all blown gaskets aside, be advised:
It is now impossible to buy two types at once.

No, I am not making meth.

Radio June 20, 2009 15:52

Meth math mishmash.

It was news to me.

W.E.G. June 20, 2009 15:56

No more 48-packs at all - that would put you way over the limit for a one-day purchase.

That's what I had in the kitchen cabinet that ran out today.

Evidently, I must have bought it before this crap went into effect three years ago.

saltshaker June 20, 2009 16:03

WEG......Same thing goes with purchasing Red devil lye ie. drain cleaner...Was in the hardware store the other day and they made me show I.D. The lady behind the checkout counter said "you dont look like no methhead to me"...I thanked her for the complement and went on my way... Larry

W.E.G. June 20, 2009 16:44

Sign a ledger to buy lye?

Wuddindahell is THAT about?

Makes me want to go buy some saltpeter just to see what kind of shit that stirs up.

hagar June 20, 2009 17:02

Like the pharmacist said to me when I was 16 and buying phosphorus and saltpeter "don't get yourself in trouble son". I did not, they never caught me..

I was primed for the ID requirement last time i purchased anti snot drugs. Took my passport. Clerk had to ask the supervisor if that form of ID was OK.   Guy behind me in line nearly lost it laughing at the register monkey.

Where would you buy that? Hmmmmm.........

Beckman June 20, 2009 17:58

Yes, I went out to buy some Sudafed for a sick relative recently. I told her beforehand that I had read that there was some new drug laws in effect. Not only was the Sudafed rationed and it's purchase required ID, but it was much more expensive than whatever replaced it. Bottom line, after discussing the options, I bought the other stuff. Not sure if it was as good as Sudafed.

No doubt this new legislation is the D-Day in the war on drugs. Victory is near! The drug war will now be over by Christmas!

Actually, all this will do is outsource USA's meth lab industry. Instead of the meth money staying in the good old USA, it will now go outside the country. Great, more money leaving the country.

I used to buy the bottle of 200 GENERIC at SAMS. Late last year I went to the Sams pharmacy to get some scrips filled and noticed that they had sudafed (ONLY) BEHIND the counter. I asked what that was about and the pharmacist told me they no longer sold the generics and you could only buy one pack and she rolled her eyes and added "LIKE AS IF THE METH COOKERS CAN'T FIND 100 TEENAGERS TO HIT EVERY SEVEN ELEVEN WITHIN A MILE AND GET ALL THEY NEED."

As of Nov last year in LA you have to show an ID for any opiates prescribed and the pharmacist enters your information into a State Police database. Supposedly the purpose is to find out who is doctor shopping and the only people they contact will be the Drs. who wrote your scrips.

Radio June 20, 2009 21:55

I'll have to remember this when I buy a bunch of lye next year to start brewing biodiesel.

Typical DC power grab, nothing to see here, move along, these are not the tweakers you are looking for.

JohnnyReb June 20, 2009 22:18

Yeah,

I went to Target to pick up a pack for my wife who has a sinus infection...

Not on the shelf...

Went to the pharmacy, whoops - no ID...

Back to the truck for ID...

Some day this war's gona end.

gsmart June 20, 2009 23:54

If you guys lived in a FREE state, you could buy 2 packs of the 48 count, like I did two days ago at Wallyworld. They where $2.96 per package. Still behind the counter and yes, we do have to show I.D. but still, not really and issue.

SWOHFAL June 21, 2009 00:19

It isn't like the Mexicans aren't cooking it by the ton in full-scale labs, not motel rooms and trailer homes.

More BS intrusion and unintended consequences.

FUUN063 June 21, 2009 00:51

Super B, don't have the safety sear and the Sudafed on the same property!!

Just so you know, we busted a meth lab across the street from my house! No Joke. Had two little kids while they were cooking it. Idiots.

The meth heads would get anough for the whole family and then let them be sick just to cook it. Then, their buddies would all get together and use what they bought, stole or whatever. They claimed it was for their children who had allergies. Turns out, the children had not been to the doctor for a long time. We obtained the records and they had been buying the stuff all over the county. One reason why it has gone up so much. Excuses.

They then threw out the hazardous shit in the normal trash! Two of the single-pot bottles were still smokin'!! WTF!!!

ftierson June 21, 2009 01:13

Buy too many strike-anywhere matches or too much Acetone at once and see what kind of attention will come your way...

I was buying a case of Carb Cleaner at WalMart a while back and the clerk asked for my ID.

I asked why she had to see my ID, and she said that she had to make sure that I was over 18 to buy the Carb Cleaner.

I asked why, and she said that the Carb Cleaner is used as an Inhalant.

I said, "But that'd dissolve your lungs and kill you!"

She said, "What's your point?"

After a moment of shocked thought, I realized that I didn't have a point...

Forrest

PS In addition, while I might look a little younger than my age, I don't look younger than 18, you know...? This age checking stuff is getting pretty stupid...

Eric Bryant June 21, 2009 07:48

Michigan still has a 48-count limit per visit. That's rather obnoxious in the middle of allergy season. Worse, though, is that the ban extends to everything that contains pseudoephedrine, as I found late one evening when trying to procure cough syrup for my wife.

And in Canada, you can buy Tylenol 3 over the counter, which is Tylenol with CODEINE.

Something is wrong when they can have the good stuff and we get carded for anti-snot.

Re: Sudafed limit

If your talking the regular 4 to 6 hour sudafed, they are 30 mg tablets. That means you can legally buy 5 of the 24 count boxes in one day (5 x 24 x 30mg=3600 mg) That is 120 tablets. You could buy a total of 12 of the 24 count boxes in one month. That would be 288 tablets. Plus your wife could get the same amount totaling 576 tablets. If you are congested enough to need more than that in one month just get a prescription from your Dr. The Sudafed laws don't apply to written prescriptions.

Regular Claritin does not contain sudafed, but a Claritin-D does. A Claritin D 12 hour tablet contains 120 mg of sudafed (30 tablets = 3.6 gm) and a Claritin-D 24 hr contains 240 mg of sudafed (15 tablets = 3.6 gm)

It is not impossible to buy 2 different products at once as long as the total is less than 3.6 gm. For example you could buy a 10 count box of Claritin-D 24 hour and 1 box of regular sudafed.

You are quite correct. There may be some very low-count packs out there that you could combine, and still get in under the limit. You have to be on top of the milligram-amounts to make the math work on that.

I was surely getting no such help as that at the CVS pharmacy counter. I spoke to the cashier, the store manager, the pharmacist, and some guy who looked like a bouncer (but who decided he didn't want to beat up an old man).

None of them knew any of this.

I hadn't bought any of that stuff since before 2006. That's why I wanted two different types at once.

I guess I only "need" three gallons of gasoline, even on my busiest workday. It would really suck if I were only allowed to buy three gallons a day. True, I could recruit others to help me "hoard" gasoline, or I could be very diligent about going back daily, buying the max-amount until I felt like I had the situation well enough in hand that I could not think about it for while.

I still think there needs to be a better policy.

You will be issued your number and your ration card shortly.

I buy smokes from the same person, at the same store almost daily. Every day I show my D.L. The lady knows me, my brand, and has them waiting for me at the check-out. Her and I know each other by name so I ask her why since I'm obviously over 18, and she most likely knows my D.L. number by heart that she still cards me? I wasn't doing it in a confrontational way because this lady actually notices what I buy regularly and clips coupons for me to use and has them waiting at the check out (what I call outstanding customer service). She tells me that the cameras are reviewed by management, and since they got busted once for not checking the I.D. of someone under 30 years old (they were over 18) they now check everyone's I.D. I've been there when a lady well into her 60's got I.D.ed for smokes. I just have my I.D. out now without being asked. It'll be less hassle when we all get the free medical care / I.D. chips planted in our forehead.

Absolutely true story.....
When the gas crisis of the 70's hit in the U.K. these were issued to all registered drivers, each book contains gas vouchers, based on capacity of the registered vheicle's engine.

The more "Vital to the economy" your job was the more books you were issued.

My father was still alive at the time & I happened to get my vouchers first. When I showed him this he burst out laughing & left the room without saying a word. About 20 minutes later he returned & handed me this. It was his priority gas coupons from WWII:uhoh: he had lots of them as he was listed as an ambulance driver, & so "vital to the war effort".

He was deployed in Persia at the time, but had to get his allowance of 4 years worth on his return for leave.

In Louisiana it is a misdemeanor NOT to check ID on cigarettes and alchol. Before long we'll have to fill out a 4473 and answer the same questions and under go an instant backround check.

Last time I looked in GA, it was a felony to possess more than 300 sudafeds at once. I will admit that I don't know if the new sudafed affected that law in any way or if it was otherwise changed.
The crap that they use to make meth should make even the dumbest person stop and think about what they are doing before ingesting that stuff.
Wally world has a rule that customers couldn't buy more than a qt of alcohol, like for stoves. Manager said they had a agreement with DOJ not to make sales of more than a qt. I then went to Home Depot and bought a gallon- guess they weren't in the sack with DOJ. (If that were true anyway.)
