Libyan Variant

In the spirit of Flypapers variant threads..

Quote Flypaper: "Thought I would set up some specific variant image threads that "We" could add to and have a great collection of specific variants for reference. Any stage of build would be great. Many variants, I don't have and will need help getting those threads started."

If you have any additional photos/information to add to this post please do so..

History:
Libya received many shipments of FAL rifles over the years. Most were the standard 50.00 flavor in variations that consist of the standard type 1 receiver, wood type C stock and standard combo device. Others were the standard 50.00 flavor utilizing a type 3 receiver and plastic furniture.

A 3rd variant is somewhat unique to Libya. This variant consists of the following characteristics:

Type 2 upper and lower receiver
Type C wood stock, non trapdoor cut with brass disc inlay
Para style rear sight
R marked semi auto selector
G1 style sheetmetal handguards on a bipod cut barrel
Combo style muzzle device
Metric magazine featuring an inch style baseplate

My build:
I have been collecting the various parts and pieces and will be putting this together this summer. I got the stock a couple years ago from another member here and I just recently got the lower from Ernst Armory. Here are some pictures of the parts I have so far. The lower and the stock are authentic Libyan parts, the rest will be whatever I can scrounge together to build an accurate model.

Kit:

Libyan buttstock, Type C, brass disc inlay, non-trapdoor cut:

Libyan lower, horizontal take down lever, wear corroborates semi auto selector as wear marks indicate that selector has never moved past semi auto position:

My research so far..

Photos from a Small Arms Survey Geneva report on FALs in Libya that was released during the Libyan Civil War:

The survey can be read here:
http://www.smallarmssurvey.org/filea...ch1-FN-FAL.pdf

As seen, type 2 upper/lower and para rear sight:

R marked semi auto selector (though in this photo it appears that the stop pin is missing), Holland style mag release? Wide foot BHO:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-a...00/Libyan2.JPG

Appears to be non-beveled trigger guard:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-c...00/Libyan3.JPG

This chart from the report shows a rifle with a very close serial number to my lower which puts this rifle/contract as 1971-72 production:

Photos collected of these rifles from online news sources during the conflict:

Para rear sight:

Note, brass disc in stock can be seen:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8...800/800xkt.jpg

Once again brass disc in stock and G1 handguards:

Another good image:

Interestingly this one has a folding charging handle.. a repair or were some of these equipped this way?

If you have additional photos of these specific rifles in action feel free to post them!

Haven't figured that one out yet, the picture above is the only thing I have found so far that has enough detail and it looks like it could be. Also a wide foot BHO. Trying to figure out the front sling loop as well whether it's G1/STG bent style or one of the two regular straight styles.

Dutch/Holland mag release:

After going through some more pictures I'm thinking that the front sling loop should be the later/longer version pictured below. I'm also wondering seeing that they used the Holland style mag release if they also used the Holland front sling loop.

The purple Harley in a Sandy Pants country cracks me up. Wllie D. would be real proud.

There was another close up picture of this guy in a crouched shooting position that had better detail of the rifle. I had it on my computer at one time but can't find it now. If anyone has it saved post it here please! :)

Nice find! Yes, Belgian bipod cut.

mp April 28, 2016 22:30

I need one of those butts.

Abominog April 29, 2016 02:26

My Libyan stock came on SRA lower with standard sight and marching wood PG.

mp April 29, 2016 20:49

Doesn't look like anyone wants to part with their Libyan buttstock, so I will have to clone it. Can someone tell me the diameter of the brass disc? Any inscriptions or stampings on them?

Huss April 30, 2016 16:17

They are hard to come by that's for sure. I measured mine right at 23mm, roughly the same size as a quarter, which is 24mm. I hope this helps you with your build.

Looks like what's about to be a crescent cut bloody eyebrow.

HighRatMaster May 12, 2016 23:47

Did anyone get one of these with their kit?

http://i901.photobucket.com/albums/a...Carrier002.jpg

embatp May 13, 2016 11:25

I think we just cobbled them together .......

HighRatMaster May 13, 2016 11:41

I don't know if that carrier is Libyan or if any of the Libyan contracts used arabic marked parts, was hoping to learn that from this thread.

Wouldn't that be a Saudi?
I thought the Libyan had numbers instead of hen scratches.

embatp May 13, 2016 13:58

Not sure what contract but I don't think libyan

I wonder if "Cheaper than Dirt" gave him free shipping on the scope and mount? :whistling:

GaryH June 01, 2016 11:54

Dont know if this is of much interest but

HighRatMaster June 01, 2016 15:40

Interesting, looks like it burned and he restocked with his own little hands right there in his nearly woodless wood shop. Barrel is bent, should be about right for 2,000 yard volley fire.

:fal:

I believe that is Saudi, Libyans just have regular english/numerical markings.

embatp July 16, 2016 14:09
