I have to give a TON of credit To HUSS, he sourced 80% of the parts. The wood, handguards, buttplate, cleaning kit, sling, and a few other parts are real Dutch. The front sight im sure was custom made. All I did was source the remaining 20%, build it out on a DSA receiver, headspace, and then match the finish with a mix of GunKote paints. It shoots like you'd expect any FAL to, 100% function. As far as the front sights, the Dutch FAL has a few things that are ONLY found on their FALs. The Front sight, the buttplate, the flash hider, and a modification to the bolt, are all proprietary to the Dutch FAL.

That rifle is simply superb. Well done.

Fantastic rifle, what modification do the Dutch do to the bolt?

I forget the exact details, but I think its a firing pin safety device? I BELIEVE that its something that disengages the firing pin until the rifle is fully into battery?

MrM1A1 March 29, 2017 23:25

Outstanding rifle, Dutch is pretty far down the rabbit hole. Ya done good.

Frank B. From H. May 15, 2018 14:23

I'm quite jealous. Dutch FAL parts are rarer than unobtanium, even here in The Netherlands. Complete rifles are next to impossible to find.

This is a very, VERY pretty rifle.

Metal Finishing

What did you use for finishing the metal pieces on here?

The handguards, bipod, but plate, and a few small parts were to the best of my knowledge, original Dutch Finish. The remainder of the gun, upper and lower receiver, etc. I custom matched by mixing various Gun Kote black finishes, mostly a gloss black and some satin black to match, or get as close as possible, to the original handguard black finish..

Thank You;

So my next question is if I don't have an example in front of me to go by then what would you suggest I use? I have no access to any part(s) that have an original Dutch finish maybe other than a butt plate and that may even be a reproduction.

Gun Kote ... oven-cure stuff from Brownells?

What about any high-temp areas?

GRA556 July 12, 2018 20:49

Did the Dutch use the Type - A gas adjustment wheel?

Is that the natural color of the stock or did you use something for that specific color? That is the color I remember the Dutch stocks being that I saw daily form 82-86. Sort of a light to medium brown.

For the finish, you would probably be safe with just using GunKote gloss black and or gathering up pictures of original Dutch FAL's and then trying your best to match them. GunKote bakes on at 325 degrees Fahrenheit so I do not believe that any heat treated areas, say an upper receiver, will be adversely affected. The Gas Adjustment is the standard numbered metric type. The buttstock I have is original Dutch, I took a minimalist approach to refinishing it. I stripped off the old finish, LIGHTLY ran it over with some fine sandpaper, and repeatedly applied coats of boiled linseed oil until I was happy with the outcome. PACO is a FF members here and has several authentic Dutch FAL's over in Belgium and has posted many examples of them here on the FILES. I suggest looking up his threads, they are a wealth of visual info on the Netherlands version of the FN. Here is an example as well: http://www.tircollection.com/t25856-...s-mariniers-kl

Thanks again Paco.

I have to agree with you on the "untactical" paint job. To be honest I dont remember the RNLAF having such high gloss models.

I've been wondering if these "survivors" could've been some sort of ceremonial models used only in parades, etc.,?

Surprised to see the one with all-plastic furniture. I never seen one of those back in the day.

Last week i vistited a unit that does keeps the ceremonial FAL's for the royal weddings and funerals. These are the same FAL's but in (serious) used conditions. They got 145 pieces left and they are all demilled. I got some pics of those. Will upload'm asap.
