IMBEL FAL inquiry
So I've got am imbel fal the lower receiver has the serial number 228898. I haven't the slightest clue how to read these serial numbers and there's pretty much no info on when this beast was made (Gee thanks Brazil). Can anybody help me in dating (yes haha) this thing? The upper has the serial CA33353 and "METRIC" written on the inside of the mag well.

You have a crappy century manufactured receiver with an IMBEL lower. There is no date associated with the IMBEL serial number, but it was rebuilt post 1994.

I called century arms about the upper receiver and they said that they "aquired" it in 2004. Whatever that means. But thanks for the info

And REbuilt?

gunplumber July 21, 2016 12:27

It is a US Made Century Manufactured receiver (generally of very poor quality). It differs from Century Imported IMBEL and Argentine receivers, which were high quality.

The IMBEL parts started as a complete machinegun. The original receiver was chopped to allow for import. Century bought the parts and rebuilt the rifle on their new semi-auto-only receiver.

Well that's good to know. It hasn't blown up in my face yet. So I guess don't ride it too hard?

Could my century receiver be stripped and the parts put on a better receiver like maybe one from ds arms?

N-Glycerin July 21, 2016 13:00

I love this rifle I just don't like that ugly century arms clowd hanging over it. This was the first gun I ever bought and I want it to be the best it can be.

The issues are dimensional ones, not safety ones. Particularly with the feeding and magazine fit. If it works, don't mess with it. If it doesn't work, then it's probably better to replace it than try to fix it.

It feeds fine. Haven't had a single problem with feeding or ejection. It doesn't like to let go of new magazines for some reason though

See post 5. Your Century receiver was most likely made by North Country Engineering. Those were pretty decent quality receivers and like gunplumber said if it is running good don't mess with it. Once they were tuned in and made to feed good they work fine.
