I was bored tonight after the baseball game got rained out. So, I rooted around for something to WECSOG.
Aha! Nasty old spludge-covered and dented G1 top cover.
I fished around in the toolbox until I found a plain 'ol 3/4" spark plug socket.
Lay the socket into the curvature of the top cover (parallel to the axis of movement for the bolt carrier). Lay the socket and top cover on a hard surface. Tap the top cover with a hammer until the dents are defeated. The outside diameter of some of 3/4" sockets may vary a bit. Mine came from a 1/4" drive el-cheapo socket set.
The groove in the top of the top cover is more tricky. I have an extension for a multi-bit screwdriver that seems to fit that groove nicely. When I use that, I put the extension in the groove, and I tap the extension along its length until those dents are defeated.
