So what the heck do you do with the top box marked "IWS"? I didn't quite understand it.

The "IWS" is the "Individual Weapons Sight" (SUSAT I think)
It's used to zero the IWS on a rifle, just like the SUIT patch is used to zero the SUIT.
The "red patch" referred to is the black one offset to the left in the second row BTW. I guess it was a B&W copy of the original.

Can I talk you into posting that image in the SUIT instructions thread as well, the only good copy I had of it got mangled when my manual pages died horribly at photobucket & a lot of those looking for the SUIT manual wil probably want the zeroing target as well.

The IWS sight is the Intensified Weapons Sight, a ANPVS-1 used by the Brits. I lust for one for my L42a1.

Thanks, Bill I was thinking of the IW rifle, not the sight.

Do you think I could use the same target to zero the OlDelft HV5x80 IWS I have?
The mount height looks lower, but the setup is different with the Argie Stanag.

My curbstone opinion is the target will work. The sight appear to be derivative of the early ANPS-1.

But, you will not know until you try.

They are not mine. The top is an ANPVS-2 and the bottom is the IWS.

I've always thought the old school night vision for the l1a1's was neat but damn are they bulky looking. Don't know if i'd drop that much cash on one when I could put it towards a more modern design.

I guess it depends on how much cash you drop. I don't know what the current going price is for a working genII sight, but I'll bet I snagged a bargain on this one, not much more than the going price for a Fero.

They are big, bulky & very heavy as well. The OlDelft weighs almost 5 Lbs, additionally it unbalances the rifle a lot, making it top heavy. Add to that the bulk & weight of C-cell batteries, instead of the newer units that aren't such hogs for power & it gets worse. The good thing is that it allows for the use of high capacity lithium cells, and the unit will run all night on a single charge.

I wouldn't like to have to drag this thing round much, but from a fixed location with the stix down it's still a very functional unit out to about 200 yards. After that it gets a little difficult to positively identify a target due to the resolution of the tubes.
