Does any one know who has a selection of chest mag pouches such as you see in use in Rhodesia?
I was reading the January 03 issue of Outside magizine and saw a farmer and his son standing guard with FN/FAL's in hand and they were wearing chest pouches that look to be (5) pouches wide. The ones I see on Tapco's site are to fat for me and the straps are to thin.

Go to this thread from FAQs (http://www.falfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=63006&highlight=Access%2A) and look at the pics and cruise the suppliers. Artkis and Tactical Tailor both make a VERY nice chest-rig.

This guy

The Swat Shop (http://members.fortunecity.com/swatshop/page16.htm)

occasionally has the real deal Rhodesian set. Also seen from time to time on the marketplace here, ebay, and other various FS boards.

I always found the chest pouch rigs to get too hot when you're humping out in the field. (Not that way you pervs!...OK...Maybe that way too!) Of course the old Canadian 64 pattern C-2 "bras" were made out of material that didn't breathe, maybe the modern stuff is better, but I'd bet that it will still heat you up like a furnace if you're doing anything more than standing around looking kewl.
I'm all for a good belt/suspender rig with belt pouches for comfort and utility.

The Artkis looks like the best combo between LBV and a Rig. I'm planning on getting one this summer. GA heat should help that evaluation!

Try "sportsmansguide.com" they have exactly what you are looking for; a 5 pouch chest set at a really reasonable cost.

Type in "web belts" as the keyword search and when it lists the catagories look under Government Surplus. 2 sets for under 10 bucks. The only thing I didn't like about it was that the pouches use velcro closure. I replace that with a snap but that's me.

Don't let the low cost fool you; these are good, sturdy and work well.

You just aren't buying a name or someone else's idea of a tactical setup. These are the design that was used in Rhodesia so effectively.

Also Numrich Arms/Gun Parts Company has a South African butt pack/belt setup that has 4 double fal pouches attached to the pack and room on the belt for singles. This was also used very effectively in Rhodesia and SA before the vest.

Barry,

Check out this link, I posted a lot of links to some of the Tactical Tailor gear....like the .308 modular mag pouches, the Tactical Tailor MAV chest rig and the Tactical Tailor vest.....

http://www.falfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=61803&highlight=Tactical+Tailor

The nice thing about having a modular set up is the initial cost is low and you can add pouches as you have the money....Another nice thing about the modular set up is that you can choose to set up your chest rig or vest exactly how YOU want it!! I have both the Tactical Tailor MAV chest rig and the Tactical Tailor vest and a few .308 pouches...I'm in the process of getting a few more of the .308 pouches and some large utility pouches so I can have both rigs set up the way I want them....

Brad at www.lightfighter.com was the person who got Tactical Tailor to start making the .308 pouches...I guess all my whining and crying did some good:rofl:

The Artkis Norloos rig is a cross between a chest rig and a vest, it's another option.....You may want to cruise Lightfighter's website and check out all the chest rigs and vests, cool pics, and good descriptions of the gear.....Just stay away from the Blackhawk gear

So do 2 FAL mags fit in each of the South African vests pouches??

I read the posts but may have missed it.

This is what I have.......The basic Blackhawk chest rig in OD.... I think it's about as close to the rhody (with the exception that it uses velcro instead of snaps) as you'll get!

BlackHawk Chest Pouch (http://www.lightfighter.com/item.html?PRID=442968)

Like someone mentioned above......The SWAT Shop, from time to time, he will get South African 7.62 chest rigs in......He's got some in now......but they're for R4 or 5.56 mags......Don't know if they will fit 7/62 mags or not@

Major Surplus (http://www.majorsurplusnsurvival.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=MSS&Product_Code=156068&Category_Code=23) has this chect harness for a reasonable price. A guy on AW bought one and it got a favorable review (http://www.assaultweb.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=26;t=003127#000000) He says it will take G3 mags easily

Yep. Some need to have the divider removed, but the two I've had didn't. The pouches are a bit long, but a booster of some sort in the bottom solves that.

BTW, I think the skinny son, in the Outside photo, had an HK type G3/91. It struck me as rather funny that they wouldn't have the same type of 7.62 NATO chambered rifles for sharing magazines.
