Before Evil tank mod tears into me, I checked the search and looked through tons of post. Most of which are old and don't give any real sense of whats left and what is on the current market.

Anyways i'm looking for a combat type vest to buy here soon. I have been looking long and hard at the Issue israeli vests, they are just awesome. But the price tag is a little much for me. I'd probably get the one that holds the FAL mags.

Are there any other alternatives? are there any other good surplus vests or maybe any of those nice South African vests left somewhere?

If I could please see a brief review of whats out there and a pro/con of the vest?

here's what it will be used for:

-most of the time it will be FAL mags for my STG and FAL carbine

-if it carried AK and Galil mags that would be great too but not necessary, i'll probably be buying a seperate vest for those and the Glock 17. most likely i'll save up for the Israeli one that will hold galil mags.

thanks guys, I just need some help.

If anyone feels this would be better off in Market place just move it or let me know and i'll move it.

Thanks again!

I don't have any experience with foreign vests or gear, but I'll give you my two cents on recent US issue. In my opinion, I liked the old LBE (belt, suspenders, ammo pouches all separate) more than the current LBV (vest). The vests are comfy to wear standing around, sure. But running around they get hot as they cover more of your torso and cut down somewhat on air circulation. Also, the pouches suck! I don't know who designed them, but I had a hell of a time getting mags and grenades in and out quickly. If you're looking for something cheap, go ahead. If you want something comfortable and effective, don't consider the Army-issue LBV. I'm sure other guys would disagree, just my 2 cents...

i'm sorta more interested in say like that South African vest, I think they call it a pattern 80 maybe but I think there is a couple different ones.

something like that

Again, I'm not too familiar with foreign stuff. Just wanted to warn you. Those LBV can be found cheap, but IMHO, you get what you pay for. Don't have to pay an arm and a leg for web gear, but don't skimp. If you like the looks, feel and fit, pay what you need to get it. Trust me, skimp now and you'll end up spending more down the road getting what you should have got in the first place.

I've got an Israeli vest full of FAL mags right now and I have to say it is the most comfortable piece of gear I've ever tried. It holds 8 mags, plus extra gear. The mags sit a little deep in the pouches (2 per pouch), which is something I don't like. Takes a little more effort to get them. I tried magpuls (the rubber kind), but they took up too much room and didn't work. If things go shi**y, I'll attach some paracord for easier extraction, but not for now. AR mags work great in the same vest, but the flaps aren't long enough to hold AK mags.

SLoV,
What's your price range?

Have you checked Lightfighter.com out?

http://www.lightfighter.com/generic24.html

They have tons of gear, take look at this espcially:

http://www.lightfighter.com/item.html?PRID=975919

Its modular, so you can buy it a piece by piece...

Also visit Lightfighter board its full of info.

Those pattern 83 nutriabrown SA vests are very good, best place to find them currently is UK(there are lots of wendors in UK, take note of taxes and custom fees plus shipping), or just put up WTB on salesboards.
However beavere that there is cheap copy of it, for $60 about.
Orginal SA vest is in Nutri brown or rarely green only, copy is in black, OD, flectarn.

Cheaper Than Dirt has the South African vests for $90. I picked one up a few months ago. Haven't had a chance to do much of anything with it yet.

They're used but functional. Mine has some mildew I have to get around to cleaning off of one of the pouches and one of the fasteners/clips on the front has to be replaces since it is broken. I just don't know where to get a replacement from. It's just a generic plastic clip type, so I should be able to buy one wherever they sell them.

Here's the link to the SA vests at Cheaper Than Dirt: South African Combat Vest (http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ctd/product.asp?dept%5Fid=1602&sku=BJR%2D479&imgid=&mscssid=8XPUR9P7BHM79GMEC7JJDHCPU3JPB5VF)

I don't know roadrunner, i'd like to say maybe keep it under 100 if possible

unless there is something absolutely superior, say like those Israeli vests, i'd consider those.

But like I said i'm going to have FAL mags, Galil mags, and AK mags

if it took all three that would be great, but if not that's ok too. I think I might buy a speciliazed vest for the galil or AK if I can find one

Ok guys i checked out the lightfigher stuff.
all that stuff looks great but it doesn't look like it will hold an FAL mag or an AK/Galil mag.

I can get a M16 magazine converter for my Galil and that would be ok but i'm not sure really how reliable the converter is.
i'd rather just use real mags for it.

I guess right now, i'd like to focus on finding one for the FAL.

What type of mags will the SA Type-80 hold?

I have tried to find the perfect combination to work for me. I tried to set my web gear up to accept both AR-15 and FAL mags. US issue 30 rd mag pouchs can hold 3 AR mags or 2 FAL mags (with the dividers cut out). Then our unit got the new LBVs and now I have two separate rigs: one for FAL and the other for M16. In some ways I like the vest, because you can get down closer to the earth, and you reach across your chest to get the mags.
For my FAL setup, I have a cobbled together rig consisting of US GI, SA (the 1980s canvas stuff I ordered from Garry Owens five years ago), and Brit. Still looking for the ideal combo. That new SA rig from Cheaper than Dirt looks interesting, though.

Nuke'em til they glow, then shoot them in the dark!

I can fit 19 M16 or 12 FAL mags in my SA LBV. Galil or AK mags won't work. Check out Tactical Tailor for modular pouches for .308 and AK mags. Northridge has Izzy pouches for the Galil or AK. Thay are OD nylon with a belt slot on the back.

Let me tell man, I bought the Israeli vest from LightFighter who bought it from www.assaultvest.com. I was looking for a good vest for a long time myself and finally got this one. The vest has so many pockets I don't even enough things to put into the pockets. I understand the cost factor. This is the best vest I think.
Good Luck Man!

EBAY (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3202421047&category=588) usually has stuff like that for reasonable prices. You might have to try calling it different things to get what you're looking for.

There was a thread on this very subject sometime late last year.

My two cents: I like the U.S. LBE, suspenders, pistol belt, ammo pouches, and canteens. That's what I know, and like. Easy to wear, easy to shed, very versatile in what you can carry.

Newer vest thingys are predjudiced against the 20 round 7.62 magazine. Most vests are oriented toward the 30 round 5.56 magazine, with the exception of FMCO's vest which can be made to accomodate the M14/FAL/G3/CETME.

It's why I like the gear above (in addition to USGI w/ Canadian pouches). They accomodate the mags, and a real load. They are not 'tactical entry' vests, yadayada.

Here are some other places that one can try to find tactical gear.
one can look at the sportsmans guide they have some from time to time.

www.blackhawkindustries.com

www.ironwolfent.com

www.tacticaltailor.com

www.military.co.uk

www.specopsbrand.com

www.arktisltd.co.uk

www.us-elitegear.com

www.soegear.com

www.eagleindustries.com

That is about all that I can find outside of the ones already mentioned and have knowledge of. One can also look in an issue of SOF and find somebody making tactical gear.

Wow.......thats odd that Galil mags won't fit the South African Pattern M83 vest.........considering that the vest was designed around the R4/R5 that the south africans adopted! Which is nothing more then a Galil!@

Slov.......The SA vest will hold Fal mags......with some modifying! As the pouches are for 5.56 mags (R4)!

I would recommend the Israeli gear. I use it for my .223 Galil and my FAL. The FAL mags do sit down in the pouch a bit far, but I got some of that plastic type foam packing material from an empty shipping box. I cut it to size and shoved it down to the bottom of the mag pouches. Now the FAL mags fit perfect. The Israeli gear is rugged and comfortable.

I would have to agree with others, if the dinero is an issue the current US surplus LBE/LBV is a good choice. As far as the mag pouches, I bought several of the Danish FN FAL/ HK camoed mag pouches that hold 2 mags and attached those to my LBE. THe camo is different than the woodlands camo but it blends in well. The other alternative is buying the new or used M14 OD green mag pouches that are on the market. The AR15/M16 mag pouches that are already incorporated into the vest can be used for other gear: pistol mags, ammo, safety gear, survival gear, etc.... I bought mine off of ebay for $16.00 and it was like new when I bought it. The mag pouches I bought from Cheaper Than Dirt for $8.00 a piece and the rest of my gear at gunshows and local surplus stores. RB

I really like to use my SAW pouches for my FAL mags on an old LCE. The SAW pouches are just about a custom fit for the mags and they can hold five mags a piece. I get them through the good old US Army supply system but you could probably find them in any surplus store around most military posts for about $10-20, $10 for used $20 for brand new.

Has anyone Bought this?

This is the "closest" thing to what I want for a LBE harness I have ever found. But, I'm kinda worried that it could be made like that $49.99 el'cheapo LBE that you always find at the Flea Market.
