Friend has custody of his son's IO ak while he's deployed.

He's wondering about quality seems to think IO is junk. I have zero ak experience. Hard to imagine a current production usa made firearm that's dangerous or defective...

Any opinions?

I know nothing about IO as a brand name. Every time I pick up a sheet metal rifle or a plastic pistol however, I think "junk".

AKs and Glocks seem to routinely prove me wrong, but my mind still goes there. JUNK!

Maybe he just has an "old-school" mentality like me?

They also had ones that were supposedly built in Poland as opposite to in the US.

None of the US-made AKs are worth a damn. Only buy if it's built by someone who knows what they're doing, using a quality receiver (like Nodak Spud or Childers) and foreign parts.

The problem with usa produced AKs is that they use sub par parts. A rifle like a wasr, zastava or arsenal was manufactured in a factory that has cranked out millions of rifles for military contracts. The tooling costs, metallurgy of parts etc was figured out a long time ago and defrayed over many, many rifles produced. So far American made AKs can not compete with the quality for the price. Companies like IO, CAI make a sub par product. They make a rifle that has perhaps a higher quality finish, but the parts like the trunnions or recievers or bolts or barrels are lower quality. What they do to save money and produce a rifle in the same price range is use cheap parts that are cast in Korea and machined in the USA. I have little interest in owning any USA produced AK. They just don't have the appeal of a rifle made in a military arsenal nor do they have the quality. The only US made AK that seems to be decent is made by Riley defense. As I have little interest, I don't know much about Riley. I have seen the rifles produced by IO and while I would like a US made AK to be produced in case of any import bans the rifles produced by IO and Century have made me wary of any US AK at this point.

IOs are junk.. there is a you tube video somewhere of some guy at an IO press junket where they get to shoot all the great new IO guns but half of them wouldn’t shoot more than a round or two without jamming.

They are hedging their business on the “Buy US Made, US Quality” pitch though their product sucks.

Watch the Rob Ski vid. He is VERY well known at the AK Files and well respected.

Run away. IO stuff is junk.

Another vid:

It doesn't get good until about 4 minutes in. This one shows IO guns failing at the range in an event sponsored by them to show off their stuff. This is likely the vid that def90 is referring to above.

IO guns deffinately have their problems. They've tried to improve the quality of their guns, but I would put the money into an import.

I have an early IO inc. import from when they were based in North Carolina.

The model of it was the STG2000.

Bought it nearly a decade ago. In all fairness, it has given me no problems.

At first, the stock and handguard were total crap beyond all measures.

I mean, TOTAL crap. I hated them.

After I changed it, was much better.

Those East German Sturmgewehr variants have a different gas block/sight/piston than standard AK's. Though that was intentional and by design.

It does limit what handguards will work on the gun though.

Oh, mine was also made in Cugir Romania, yes the same place that makes wasr's. :whistling:

Imports are another thing all together, they are fine.. They import the Polish Beryl AKs. IO built rifles on the other hand, (yes they build their own rifles from scratch with their own parts) are horse shit. They make Century's all US made AKs look like the greatest thing put out outside of Russia.

They imported some built in Radom (under the brand "Pioneer" even though they were made in the Archer factory); the receiver will say "Pioneer" on the left side.

The Proudly Made in Murica Yeah! IO version, well

Couple of weeks ago i was shooting my C39V2 for the first time. There was an old man at the range with a new IO being fired for the first time as well. The rifle looked and felt nice. I shot it and it hit at 100 right out of the box. There was nothing visually wrong with it. Very straight rifle.
I watched him struggle with it until his hand was bleeding before he gave up and went home. I never saw it fire two rounds in a row. He said it costed him $600.

IO has a very...poor reputation in regards to their US made AK's, and for many good reasons. There are countless videos of folks more qualified than I that can address the problem. However the common consensus is that the IO AKs are made of cheap cast parts, with bad rivets. I can tell you that I've had to send back five of their guns in the last year for warranty repairs for one problem or another.

I imagine if you got one that works, it wouldn't be a bad plinker, just don't run it hard.
