Does anyone have any notion why the barrel torque on FAL's is so large? The 100 to 120 foot pounds I have seen quoted implies a huge preload in the barrel and receiver threads; this is much larger than used on many other firearms. Many target rifles have barrels that are barely more than hand tight.

I have been getting up to speed on FAL's for the last two weeks; tried to order a kit today but couldn't get anyone to pick up the phone. FFL sent a copy of his license to two IMBEL receiver sellers, so I should be able to order that part next week.

I haven't built the first one, but I can see the possiblities ...

Probably so they don't come un-done by rough handling and extreme conditions. How much would it suck if the barrels for an entire platoon started coming loose? Something would get tightened for sure, and it wouldn't just be barrels.

And because the Herstal gang has this big-ass machine they use to install the barrels.
