View Full Version : The burly mans hand guards

I'm getting close to finishing up my last batch of hand guards. This time I purchased a wide variety of blocks, instead of all from the same tree. I also picked up a maple burl block and made a metric and inch set out of them.
I got this one done for starters.... I'll post more as they get done.

I'm not much of a Maple guy so they will end up on the MP soon.

I have trouble selecting a piece of wood with which to start a fire to keep me warm, yet you continue to amaze with your woodworking abilities! Bravo!

Amazing, nature and skill combined.

I'm no wood expert, will that grain make them more likely to break, or stronger?

Its a shame about that spalting - either needs to not be there, or there be more of it :)

Looks wonderful though... and as said, it would take a really nice hunk-o-metal to do them justice...

Thanks for all the input.

I got a few more done this weekend. I'll get a auction going for the burl sets soon.

Stronger, actually...all that pretty grain is the wood cells interlocked and twisted up with each other. That's why pipes are made of burlwood...the interlocked cells prevent the wood from splitting as it heats.
