Just got in a Springfield and another Winchester heeled receivers to add to the H&R for Fall builds.
These will compliment the Winchester and TRW builds that were already completed.

More Bulas right? Dang, those are nice! Almost makes me want to switch my all Winny LRB to one of those receivers.

What kind of longevity could you expect from a heeled receiver, on par with an original?

Probably a little longer as the working parts of the receiver are extremely well made.

I have a bunch of LRBs that were put together using parts kits from each of the big 4. If I ever decide to use all USGI, I could cannibalize and make them all by mfg, but I think that is a waste. Small parts are expendables and Bula Defense Systems parts are as good or better than the original USGI.

As my granddad used to say " You aren't going to do it any younger".
Always nice to see folks getting started on a new build.

Thanks, I plan on hanging all 5 of the USGI heeled rifles in my office when they are finished. Kind of a Viet Nam tribute. 2 Win, 1 H&R, 1 SA and 1 TRW.

European invasion day weekend so I decided to get going on these critters.
1st step is to lap the bolts to the receivers. A couple of minutes on each and I get the 60/40 contact that I like to use.

Using the Brownell lapping tool, because I like the pressure that it applies and they work.

http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x413/nf1e/IMG_1409_zpskl3bw1vg.jpg (http://s1180.photobucket.com/user/nf1e/media/IMG_1409_zpskl3bw1vg.jpg.html)

Just a tiny dab of lapping compound on the leading edge of both receiver lugs.

http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x413/nf1e/IMG_1410_zpsxqmehizr.jpg (http://s1180.photobucket.com/user/nf1e/media/IMG_1410_zpsxqmehizr.jpg.html)

Now the boring part. Wiggle waggle wiggle waggle to and fro until the desired contact is reached. Usually a couple of munutes on each receiver bolt combination and we are good to go. I like 60% right lug and 40% contact but that is just my choice.

http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x413/nf1e/IMG_1412_zpsiug21sdk.jpg (http://s1180.photobucket.com/user/nf1e/media/IMG_1412_zpsiug21sdk.jpg.html)

There is the contact I like to see.

Next step is the barreling. My favorite of all. First a light application of resin to both side of the vise inserts.

http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x413/nf1e/IMG_1415_zpsl7m76c5r.jpg (http://s1180.photobucket.com/user/nf1e/media/IMG_1415_zpsl7m76c5r.jpg.html)

Now farmer tighten the barrel in the vise and make sure the front sight appliance that is going to be on the finished product is in place.

http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x413/nf1e/IMG_1416_zps0cbiklho.jpg (http://s1180.photobucket.com/user/nf1e/media/IMG_1416_zps0cbiklho.jpg.html)http://

Apply a nice coating of barrel paste. This is my choice. Some like nothing and others just a no seize .

http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x413/nf1e/IMG_1417_zpsvmdgxrm3.jpg (http://s1180.photobucket.com/user/nf1e/media/IMG_1417_zpsvmdgxrm3.jpg.html)

Hand tighten the reciever in place and a little painters tape to keep the receiver wrench from marring the receiver.

http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x413/nf1e/IMG_1418_zpsd92b69ts.jpg (http://s1180.photobucket.com/user/nf1e/media/IMG_1418_zpsd92b69ts.jpg.html)

Tighten receiver wrench in place.

With indexing fixtures in place, Badger Ordnance in this case, proceed to tighten receiver on barrel until desired index is attained. This particular level is good to one tenth of a degree so that is good enough for my stuff.

http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x413/nf1e/IMG_1423_zpscwcvrmvp.jpg (http://s1180.photobucket.com/user/nf1e/media/IMG_1423_zpscwcvrmvp.jpg.html)

I use the same level and move it from front to back and adjust the barrel index until they are equal.

http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x413/nf1e/IMG_1422_zpsphc6gcco.jpg (http://s1180.photobucket.com/user/nf1e/media/IMG_1422_zpsphc6gcco.jpg.html)

Next is setting the op rod guide. I like to dimple the barrel in the area the guide is going to live using a nice sharp center punch.

http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x413/nf1e/IMG_1425_zps3uhtlcjc.jpg (http://s1180.photobucket.com/user/nf1e/media/IMG_1425_zps3uhtlcjc.jpg.html)

Tap the guide in place using my 100+ year old chunk of brass pipe. Drive the set pin in place.

Toss on the remaining small parts and we have 3 rifles ready for finish reaming and then a little wood. Should be ready to take out on the range tomorrow.
Time to watch a movie with the boss.
Made a good morning and part of the afternoon project anyway.

Fricking awsome great tutorial... I have a barrel vise for my fal building I don't know the maker. Is that the brownells vise? Can you tell me the outside diameter of the bushings?

ArtBanks
October 08, 2017, 17:13
Yep, Brownell's. I have the full set if inserts.
O.D. is 1.741

Thank you very much. That's what mine are side to side. Is there a slight gap in the top and bottom when you tighten them down as well? The length of mine are not as long. I think my vise is a older version but might still work.

Finished them up this morning. Headspaced and ready for the range tomorrow.

Pull through reamer oiled up and ready to do it's thing. Set these at just about 1.633.

Got the gang of GI heeled rifles to stand still long enough for a photo. 2 Winchesters and 1 of each of the others.

Just experimenting with a Hi Lux 3 - 10 . For 400 bucks I just had to try. Mounted on Bula/JRA receiver with TRW usgi heel.
Found a PRO MAG low steel mount and some quick release UTG rings in a parts drawer. This is right about where I think the scope will stay.

Got out a played a bit with the Hi Lux setup on my TRW/Bula with standard profile barrel in GI walnut stock. I can see this scope is going to take a little practice on my part to get it down. Not like the 25 pwr ones I am used to.
Target on right is start 10 rnd grp , at least it was on paper at 100. The left target is the final one. Talk about over correction on the elevation knob. Went from low 2 to up 2 before I found home. Any how when it settled down there are 7 strikes in the red X. This is with XM118 LR LC 13.
