Curious on everyone's opinion. What is the best obtainable, and won't break the bank, version of the FAL? Meaning parts for a build, or a whole rifle like DSA. Imbel? StG?

I have a century R1A1 that is actually pretty decent, but I'd like to build one I'm proud of to put next to my Russian AK collection

Whatever floats your boat from a member here in the marketplace. Have purchased nice expensive examples and inexpensive builds others grew bored with and were moving on to another project. Great thing is rifle will already be 100% sorted out and ready to run. Now just count your pennies and slide down a little farther down the topics on index page. If prefer a kit, same advice.

So there is no such thing as a bad FAL? No country made junky parts?

Two different questions here. Are you asking for the best value FAL variant rifle OR cheapest parts build????

Fortunately there is an answer that satisfies BOTH .... Purchase a Century butthole stock rifle and convert it back to its former glory. They can still be had on the cheap and they have IMBEL or Argie receivers. Get a nice US wood furniture set and you will have a BEAUTIFUL rifle that will out shine ALL your AKs.

Kits and parts are drying up. Only viable choice is building an IMBEL clone. Can't go wrong with an IMBEL on IMBEL build, it's as close as you can get to building a factory FAL. Get a kit and receiver while still available. Good luck on your build.

Buy an IMBEL kit from ARS.

Buy an IMBEL receiver on GunBroker (PARSI occasionally sells NOS ones that have never been built upon).

Have a great time screwing your parts gun together, and now you have an IMBEL on IMBEL riFAL.

Life is good!

Or, hire ARS to build it for you, too.

What receiver would be best to get rid of my century stamped one to make her a bit more authentic?

Pre ban ones are very nice .SAR48,org FN , Argy etc

But any good kit build is good to go if good parts+builder are in use ..And some company builds are good as long as you check first ..Century is all over the board on working though

Is your rifle a cast Century receiver or an Imbel imported by Century? Wouldn't want to throw out one of the best receivers available just because Century put their name on it.

Many (most?) of the IMBEL kits currently on the market came from a large lot purchased by Chile for an anticipated war that never happened. They were mainly used for drill...often they will have rough exterior finish but are pristine on the inside.

It has ZA markings on it, that's about all I know.

You need to get the notion out of your head that an FAL is cheap if built on quality parts. IMBEL builds are not cheap either. The parts alone have gone to 1000. Refinish park add 125. Build tools 250. Add 120 for a press if you don't have a sturdy vise. If your having heart burn on the STG, then this may not be your cup of tea. You did say you wanted an exceptional example

ZA markings on the UPPER receiver?

We need pics of what you have to determine what you need.

As for potential:

Not sure what he is looking for this one, but it has an IMBEL receiver:

So correct me if i'm wrong (you'll probably be correcting me) if I get a nice metric upper, I will have a pretty badass FAL?

ZA is Zimbabwe Army. In his early days, circa 1980-1982, back before he wrecked the economy beyond all means of repair, Robert Mugabe purchased some IMBEL FALs to supplement the Army's inventory. There are reports that many of the armories had been raided by returning South African mercs and assigned soldiers, who "liberated" many small arms, taking them back to South Africa with them.

A ZA IMBEL is a great FAL. Most are roll marked and their number sequence begins where the RA [Rhodesian Army] numbering left off. 19,XXX - 23,XXX.

Again, we don't know until we know what you have. You are basically sayin, I have a GM made vehicle, what is the proper engine for it?

You could very well have an IMBEL receiver. You could also very well have an L1A1 lower. You haven't given us enough information to determine.

Exactly. Need pics of the left and right side of the upper receiver, as well as pics of the left and right side of the lower receiver. Then a pic of the overall rifle.

AAAaaaahhhhhh, I've seen so many, they all blend in after awhile.

No need to change anything.

Looks like an IMBEL lower, so you could spend $500 on an IMBEL receiver and another $200 in tools or pay someone to install it.

OR

Keep it as it is AND get one of the ones I posted!!!!!

Why have only one when you can have TWO at twice the cost??????

I wish! I've got a pair of Russians i'm working on right now, AKM and AK74, so no budget for new toys.

I will definitely keep my eye out for an imbel upper, likely used since that gear logo one is $600. They made imbel in metric, right?

Yes only metric (however, some have inch cuts) ....

The two rifles I posted for you have IMBEL receivers, you may be able to get the entire rifle for $600.

How do you identify inch cuts?

pistolero1911

@MikeK

Your R1A1 type III receiver is made in the USA by Caspian Arms [CA prefix on serial number provides the clue].

IMBEL's are 99% metric, type IIIs, and generally regarded as some of the best receivers for builds. It is the "correct" SA receiver for your ZA marked lower. Occasionally, an IMBEL with inch cuts for the dust cover, charging handle and mag well can be found. More common are IMBELs with just the inch dimension dust cover and charging handle cuts.

Here are a couple of NOS metric Gear Logo IMBELs currently up for auction on GunBroker:

http://www.gunbroker.com/item/701872080

The second receiver is directly from PARSI, he was an importer and is still selling from his stock. I believe that the first one was also imported by PARSI, and part of a FalFiles group buy from last year.
