Friend is new to AR, got him into an M4 type rifle for $350. He unleashed me with an all-in budget of $1k to set him up, which will include one of those 420 rd cans of ammo. So probably starting at:

$350 rifle
$129 ammo can from PSA

He's a deer farmer so will probably want something for dinging critters at up to 200 yd. No CQB games for him. He is possibly the least tacticool person I know. So QD scope mounts and BUIS are not important.

So have at it. What do you recommend?

Nikon is hard glass to beat for value vs price IMHO and I too generally prefer cross-hairs for most shooting.

I have a 4X on my plate banger carbine that I suspect has seen something well north of 2,000 rounds, and a 3x4x50 on a National Match HB for coyotes that has seen a few hundred rounds.

If he's going to be walking around with it a lot he could use a quality sling

Nikons are great scopes for the money. Here is one for about $149 that might fit the bill:

Nikon P-223 3-9x40 Mate BDC 600

I'd get a different upper, with a 20" barrel, to get them velocities up.... also maybe something with a hole in the end that is larger than .224" ....

Since it is too late for that, quality glass, like the Leopold VX1 "Hog", or anything quality with low (1-2x) to medium (5-7x) magnification. Nikon scopes are good too.

I'd go with a 10 round mag, simply so it will be short enough to not cause issues if he has a rest handy (across the hood of a car, etc)

Quality quick-on ear muffs, kept with the rifle, so he doesn't go "huh?" next time you talk to him after he pops a deer.

Built him an StG58 15 yr ago. I think he fired it the day we built it. The two mag I gave him are still primed with the same Hirt ammo. I think the AR will e a better rifle for his purposes but I'm with you on the bigger bore.

20-inch barrel. A2 slick side if he wants.

I like Nikcon scopes too, but also really like Burris scopes too. I'd also go 20 inch barrel too. Can't have enough ammo, get something good like Blackhills Ammo not just 55gr FMJ

More ammo, and maybe some mags.

Vortex and Primary Arms make some good optics comparable to Nikon in price point. I have all three and am pleased with all.

First thing I'd do with a cheap AR is replace all the springs with quality springs. Use a Colt extractor spring. The rest can either be Colt or Sprinco

I've got about 200 Colt extracter springs that were NOS, found in a warehouse that Sarco forgot they owned. You can have them all, free. Just pay postage.:justkidding::justkidding::justkidding::ju stkidding::biggrin:~ss

This optic is hands down the best glass for the coin. This and a Leupold IMS mount for about $80 and that would put the package just over the 1k mark with said rifle.

For the optic I would recommend the Bushnell 1x4x24 with throw lever. It has gone up 50 bucks in prince in the year I have been looking at them. I believe it is because of the demand and positive reviews.

I'm very happy with my Bushnell 1-4x24mm on my carbine's ,I also put it on a QR mount . w/ KAC mini USGI 2-600m secondary site .

On my 20'' I use the same set up . w/ 3-9x40mm Bushnell

Can't beat the price and quality . But that's just me , save on optics for more ammo .

Natchez has a blem Leupold 3-9x40 for $125... having a hard time resiting picking one up myself... Between than and a Burris PEPR mount or similar you are only using $200 of the remaining budget.,,
