View Full Version : Gunplumber stock refinishing method

I have started to refinish the stock on my G1 from Tapco. I tried the GP boiling water method to degrease the stock and it looks really good, now to wait a few days for it to dry out :D I took more then a half hour to get the grease out of this puppy though. I just hope it won't crack.

Looks like you are getting there on that stock.
Something I read a long time ago told about sealing the end grain on stock blanks before they were kiln dried to help prevent cracking. Apparently they dried more evenly that way. Not sure if it could work out with a completed stock that you are air drying. Might be worth trying if you can figure out how to do it though.

I've used GP method for bout 2-3 years now, they always come out looking nice. But I just recently went to using a TSP slurry after boiling for a slow drying time. Mix the TSP with hot water and put it a well lit area and let it dry. Wash of the TSP and the stock looks like new, and give it another day or 2.
