View Full Version : Who to build a custom M1A?

May 10, 2017, 01:05
I've owned a couple M1A'a over the years. I have a JAE G2 stock and no rifle for it at this time. I'm looking to have a custom/match rifle built for it. I want to use the VLTOR CASV handuard/rail system as well.

I have few brand new parts already like trigger group, SEI brake, and a few Sadlak parts.

My question is whom would you all reommend for the built. Can I buy a complete barreled action from a builder? Should I send in my parts, including the stock, and have everything fit by the builder? Do I need to buy a receiver somewhere separately and then send it to a builder? Not really sure how to kick this all off??

My budget......I'd like to stay under 3K, not including the stock and handguard which I already have.

Two suggestions for barreled actions.

1. Jon Wolfe is a current dealer for Bula Defense Systems and can assemble a barreled action for you.
2. LRB has barreled actions that are great.

Both are top shelf.

I had this one built by LRB to my specs about 10 years ago using TRW parts and a Kreiger 1-11 stainless barrel. I added the scope, mono pod and the muzzle brake.

Maybe figure out who will build then talk with them. They may be able to get betrer pricing on whatevee commmercial parts you will use.

Ted Brown built mine several years ago. I sent him everything so he could deal with any deviations from USGI dimensions. Cant say if he's better than any others but he built me a fine rifle, communication was good, no surprises. At minimum the builder will need receiver, barrel and bolt.

Having it built by a reputable smith can affect value of your rifle if you ever need to sell it. More so if match conditioned. Mine is a basic USGI.

Talk to Ted Brown.

Tell him Terry sent you.

That's two votes for Ted.....Looks like a good place to start.

Thank you.

You won't go wrong with either Jon Wolfe or Ted Brown
Jon Wolfe is in Columbus N Carolina , Ted Brown is in Jacksonville Oregon
I'd talk to both see who & what clicks for you
And you might ask Wolfe about the 5R barrel he stocks , it's a real shooter .

Also, there is Jon Tank in Fremont, NE and Warbird's Custom Guns in Houston, TX. Finding THE Man to build your rifle is more important than the parts you hand selected as there are many assholes out there who can butcher a rifle, your parts, your money, your patience and tax your religion.
