Ah-The Famous Grouse! What mam...errr...memories....

I used to buy a bottle or two along with an occasional case of Guiness (in thick aluminum cans with pull tab tops) from a fine gentleman we'll call Brian The Purser aboard The Baltic Eagle (she's since been sold and renamed something else) at the port of Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia during Spring Break of 1991. After the vacation tour in Kuwait was over and 2nd MarDiv retrograded back to Camp 15, we spent some time at the port preparing our beautiful M1A1s for embark back to CONUS (I was able to examine the UK Challenger I MBTs while I was there. Interesting they were, if not somewhat different in their philosophy towards MBT design. That said, England has a tradition of designing good tanks).

Anyway, the Saudis thoughtfully provided us with once or maybe twice-treated sewage water from a ditch next to a highway to hose our tanks down to remove all the sand from them (!) per U.S. Dept. of Agriculture specs before being loaded aboard ship for transit back to the United States. Don't worry, it's not like we stood around hosing MBTs off in our PT gear and a turd would fly out of the hose and splatter against the turret or hull of an Abrams. It smelled badly, but the water was....ummm....clear, more or less.

In the meantime, being a young Sergeant of Marines in a dry country full of (insert derogatory word here) in the ME demands considerable resourcefulness. Thank God for ports (built by western construction companies, BTW) with ships from England at anchor. US maritime ships are-regretfully-dry, while UK maritime ships are "wet". Thank you Brian, and I hope you are enjoying your well deserved retirement :)

Don't care for the new label, however. I'm nostalgic for tradition. Sometimes, I really hate change (especially since that "change" means I'm more than a quarter century older than I was when I was listening to Capt. Salmon tell us we needed to pull the packs from the hulls to *really* do the job right). Yay....
