Yup. I'd be happy with a retro version.

Guns magazine has a cool article this month, written by a doctor who just purchased an AR10, built from a kit and a steel receiver, back in the day.

I don't know what it is about the looks of the originals but I have a fondness (weakness) for them.

Would like a higher resolution picture of receiver to see if it's a weld up anything like this.

http://i61.tinypic.com/2nar8ef.jpg

Took every single part, scanned in native size then converted to vectors and used micrometer and caliper to measure every part to tweak to exact specifications. Buddy cut on CNC laser which was slick amd fast from a piece of scrap out of scrap rack. Welded one up and worked perfectly but was way heavy. Have thought about up-scaling to AR 10 size and welding one up just for grins. Would take half a day measuring and scale correctly but would be unique. Figure time to do computer work, nest parts and render g-code then cut almost no real investment. Time sitting over TIG welding it all up, finish grinding and finishing... Could buy half a dozen finished lowers and come out cheaper.

Read the article. Guy in photos was dressed in the wrong uniform ;) then again, the waist on the pants I have seems like it's a size 28. Americans are just bigger, some because we are fat(me) but all because in general our frame is larger.

There is a nice website that breaks these down pretty well, and not just the porto variants either!

The original AR10 is a very fine weapon. Develped in the 50's. It was way ahead of its time.

I'd love to have a Portuguese AR-10 and a pair of para trousers to go with the rest of my para-quedistas kit. Finding the the trousers in normal sizes is more challenging than finding the rifle.

I love the old AR-10's. Not so much a fan of the new stuff. 1791- yours is very nice, Ever shot it?

Now the real question is- does anyone have one they want to sell?:whistling:

I have both a sudanese and two ports. Also bought an AR-10b. Bought a case of magazines for $1.00/mag. I fell in love with them. Far ahead in the day and live today thru the SR-25. They were loved by the ports in Angola and were still carried in the late 1980s by the Sudanese special forces ( my cousin trained them and they carried AR-10s. He said the group that got the AR-10s were not you usual troops.) I would like to know what the Italians did with theirs.
I did see 4 or 5 new transitionals in the racks with L1A1s at an arms dealer warehouse in the Netherlands during Gulf 1. ( Brits were buying L1A1s back).

When the modern ArmaLite released their AR10B retro in the early aughts, I had to have one.
I shot it for 10 years then sold it, and I kinda regret it now and again.
Like this one (not mine).

Yes, I have shot this AR10 several times. Nice and lightweight rifle. I do like the adjustable gas system. It is not for sale. Original AR 10's do pop up on gb now and then.

1791,

Is that a Sudanese or Guatemalan contract? The Portuguese I have is actually pretty heavy in my opinion.

Id buy a repro, but not for what Armalite would want for it.

With all the AR15's out there you would think that someone would reintroduce a repo of the AR 10 again. I'd be content with a 10B. Great piece on the orignal.

I've always thought they were cool. I owned a Central KY Arms rec Porto AR-10 some years ago. Kit likely came out of Mozambique or Angola in the early-mid 1980s, stock set was painted green. Had a Birmingham proof mark on upper. Interarms had a warehouse in Birmingham, I believe and brought it in from there.

I remember it was HEAVY on the steel CKA receiver.
