Wasn't Hathcock just using an ordinary hunting 700? I do like that one you have. I've been threatening to get a bolt gun for awhile just to prove I can shoot one just as shitty as my FALs

No, he used a USMC Win Mod 70 Target rifle in 30-06 his first tour and switched after the Marines got the Rem 700 M40 in 308

How much do you think the value will drop if I fire it?

I doubt it would affect value significantly at all esp with match-grade ammo.

That there's some funny shit!

Beautiful piece, look forward to yer Range Report!

I picked up something from a High End Guitar Shop...
I showed 'em a mint condition thousand plus guitar and they adamantly said....
"grab a flat bladed screwdriver and scratch it"
Then you won't consider it mint and be wormy about playing and enjoying it.
Make it a ceremony with your favorite elixir

Nice rifle Dave, I like a Model 70 or a 700, I like to think of America FULL of Sniper rifles that usually only hunt Deer and are READY to Hunt Traitors.

Zero.

Because a store-bought gun you are required to maintain, but that you are timid about firing has a value of naught.

This is a desirable gun. It isn't special.

It isn't Carlos Hathcock's rifle. Its a factory-built tribute piece. Please tell my you aren't REALLY thinking about saving this gun for the one gun-geek who will fingerfuck it and then complain because one corner of the box is dented.

Well they only made 600 of them in the Remington custom shop in 2006. In 2006 the rifle alone sold for $1100, by 2013 they were going for $1800.

Maybe I'll put it Gun Joker and see if I can get $2800 for it.:tinfoilhat:

A new replica M40A1 without optics goes for $3990

I put it up for $2675 http://www.gunbroker.com/item/624831343

Yup.

The bore was rough, and the rifle would only hold 2 MOA.

A very consistent 2 MOA.

Maybe the archer has more effect than the bow.

......

Funny you point that out. A consistent 2 MOA rifle will whack a target just as dead as a consistent 1/2 MOA sweaty pet rifle. So will a 3 MOA or, even a 4 MOA. Some folks get a religious bent when a "sniper" type rifle shoots anything larger that one inch and call it unfit for purpose.

Nice rifle Dave.

There used to be an old Korean era Army sniper who shot High Power matches with us. He used a field-grade P17 Enfield and could out shoot most of the ones of us who used match rifles.

good chance to work on the long range skills. the simplicity of the set up is striking. the new ones with the knobbies & bazillion parts seem a bit overdone.

I have always wanted an M-40 but never got one. I guess they no longer make that model but then there is this one.

https://www.remington.com/rifles/bolt-action/model-700/model-700-stainless-5-r-threaded-barrel

That's like the M24 with a few changes. Namely the SS barrel and receiver, the 20 inch barrel vs. the 23.5 inch barrel but it still has the 11.25 to 1 rifling which works great for bullets in the 170 to 180 range. I've seen a few targets from M24's that were sub-MOA with a 10 round group.

While I like the original M40 the OP posted, I'd sell it and get one of the new Remington M24 clones. I tried to talk the Col. and MSgt. into letting me buy my M24 when they where closing down the base I was working at. Wouldn't go for it, said there was to much paper work to get the Army to sell it.

I shoot a VS with a Shepard scope. It's < 0.75" at 100 yards.

One is for show, the second is for go.

My guess would be that it was one of the last rounds fired and that your aiming point was missing due to being shot out.

Been working on new load for my Rem 700 this Spring. I think I found the key, at least for me shooting it at 100 yds.
DAG brass trimmed to 2.05. Neck turned from .015 to .013.
Tula Berdan primer using 40.5 gr of 4064 under a Berger 150 gr fb held .004 off the lands.
Redding competition bushing die .001 under and Redding micrometer competition seating die. Bullets are running right at 2550 at 12'.
Scope is Leupold MK 4 8.5 - 25.

Ten round group at 100yds fired prone supported with bipod. Bag under butt. Intentionally left so as not to obstruct aim point. Still got that dang flier at 12 oclock.

Max spread .6" Adverage .32"
My best group in the past was a .44 adverage.
That is an improvement of about 25% just by doing a little more work up on the load and a little more than standard brass prep.
This was fired clean cold bore. Temp 59 deg. F.
