I just picked up a "new" according to SARCO M1D .308 Garand barrel for $300. I received the barrel and I am happy with the purchase - the barrel is in excellent condition (TE of 0). They are listed on the SARCO website as .30-06 - but the one I got is definitely .308. Overall length is exactly 24"

Does anybody know anything about these barrels.

The barrel is not marked - anywhere - but it looks like some sort of military production - the park definitely looks military and there is some minor surface rust around the sleeve where it joins the barrel. Its definitely not something that a current commercial barrel maker put together recently.

Any ideas?

I am under the impression that the military never made an M1D in .308 just 30.06. I could be wrong.

I don't "think" the US military ever did. But somebody did - maybe the Greeks or the Italians. But its a 24" barrel - not 23 1/2". This does not look like a commercial product to me.

I called SARCO and talked to the people in the warehouse.

They're telling me that somehow a .308 barrel got mixed into the lot - and that they are all supposed to be new production 30-06 Citadel barrels with repro M1D blocks.

If its a new barrel its been sitting around for a long long time.

Go figure

Make sure it doesn't have one of those caliber adapters in it....
