So I scored a free float for cheap I thought, turns out it's a low profile and I need a high. Who makes an upper that is low profile besides DPMS, who makes both and when did they do the switch? I do know that Armalite and Aero Precision are both high profile, and Armalite takes a different barrel nut.

I wrote a fairly detailed post sometime back on this subject,, it's here in the files some where but i don't know how to find it.......what i remember is around 2009 or so dpms came out with what they call there G1 model ar10, there low profile rec...before 2009 they were just dpms ar10s, high profile rec...2014 came out with there G2 models......there is VERY little aftermarket acces.for G2s.......tons of aftermarket acces. For the G1 low profile rec. rifles..........the old,pre 2009 ar10s have a modest amount of aftermarket access.........if your looking for G1 parts they are all over the web.......................your post says you need a high profile free float but you want to know who makes low pro upper besides dpms,,, you lost me on what your looking for..

Confused myself. Do you need a low profile upper, a high profile handguard or both? May can help as have some odd AR10 parts, no promises just remember some extra handguards and upper at work gun room. Unsure if going to work today or not. Waiting on call from doc.

Midwest Industries has Keymod and MLok handguards for both profiles.

I'm just wandering who still makes a low profile upper, I have the low profile free float for a build that I'm working on, up until I tried to mount it I had no idea there were 2 different heights. If someone has one laying loose that they'd be willing to part with that would be an option for me as well.

DPMS was the only one to make a low-profile upper to my knowledge.

That's why you got it cheap,as they are not popular at all.

That was the answer I was looking for, I have the low profile hand guard and need the low profile upper receiver. if anyone stumbles across one in stock please let me know. I'm sorry I wasn't clear on that in my op.

Sources of low-profile DPMS pattern uppers include
Alex Pro with laser T-marks and M4 feedramps
Fulton Armory (same OEM as Alex Pro)
Guntec (no M4 feedramps or T-marks)
Veriforce Tactical (Guntec is their OEM)
with vendors seemingly split fairly evenly between low and high profile.

The switch happened in 2009.

As a caveat, with no milspec and published blueprints everyone reverse engineers the DPMS LR308 or Armalite AR10 with tolerances varying. I gave up trying to find an upper which mated to my genuine DPMS LR-308 lower with the tight fit I expected in a $2000 gun and got a builder's set from Aero Precision ($500 for lower, upper, and handguard in your choice of keymod/mlok and 12"/15").

I'd suggest doing the same from the vendor of your choice (fit can be tighter than if you just buy one manufacturer's parts) if you're not trying to comply with laws like California's where your lower is a grandfathered assault weapon.

While you're doing that, get a lower with a tension screw for the upper. Large frame AR rear takedown pin holes are ovalized horizontally and most orient the detent vertically which creates slop.

AR/M16/M4 uppers have ovalized takedown holes...
