View Full Version : Bubbafied L2 lower?

I need your help determining what this lower receiver is. I bought this as an L1A1 kit almost 20 years ago and I never really even so much as took it out of the box until the other day when I was trying to see if I had D66 for Capt D (sorry no luck Capt D). Once I started looking at it I thought the selector looked a little off, since it was rounded, and then I noticed the A for the third selector position. The "A" looks almost electro stenciled, but so does the number after the UB60, so I'm not sure who would have done this if not Bubba himself. Also, I pulled the selector out and to my unprofessional eyes I'm pretty sure it's an L2 selector and does not appear to be homemade. To my knowledge this is a British lower (the trigger has the D marking), but I'm not used to seeing the "M" proof by the break open lever. Am I missing something, was this done on purpose by a manufacturer, did Century or some other company just throw L2 selectors in lowers, or is this 100% Bubba's work?

Reminds me of a SA conversion.

SAS? Northern Ireland maybe? I've seen pics of L1a1s with a bipod and 30 rd bren mag over there.....

Years ago I bought two l1a1 kits from dsa. The selectors on both kits looked like yours. They advertised that some of the kits had rhodie paint on them. My kits were mixed brit and aussie parts. I sold one kit and still have one.

SA conversions, SAS, and Rhodie models all sound far better than Bubba. If it was a Rhodie wouldn't it have an RA number on it or did they sometimes not number their FALs?

God I would love to be able to prove it was an SAS version:crystalball:. Do you still have a picture of an L1A1 with the bipod? Did the Brits ever make L2 selectors?

Saw a rhodie inch kit for sale in the market place a few years back from Adam762. It had the baby poop camo and the lower had a crude engraving of an "A" and a modified selector. It definitely looks like it was done in the field. My bet is on it being Rhodesian or South African.

And the rhodies had brits.....

I say Rhodesian. They began receiving SLRs from Britain in 1960. I've seen a few ex-Rhodesian lowers with either no RA-number or a ZA-prefix number, so I'd bet at least some of them never received a number in Rhodesian service. Remember, they were replaced rapidly in frontline service beginning in early 1968, and after that were in secondary roles, such as local police and AgricAlert technician crews.

That's some great info, thanks for all the help. Looks like I have one of those seeds that will start to grow into a Rhodie. :D

Does anyone know the company that manufactured the lower? The only proof I see is the "M" located next to the break open lever.

Birmingham Small Arms. UB 60 = UK production, BSA 1960.
