So we have another player in the AR field, the 22 Nosler, 25% more internal capacity than 223/5.56. Pushes a 55 grain bullet and a 77 grain bullet at 3,350 fps from 18" barrel and uses 6.8 spc II magazines. How many more players are we going to see in the AR market. My interest is in how long throats will hold up, especially at high rates of fire. Anyone played with one yet?

I must be missing something, a new barrel, different mags, hard to find ammunition, but same bullet size, all for 300 fps? Yep, I'm diffinitely missing something.

Nosler should focus on making what they already offer. I quit using their
125gr 30 cal ballistic tips because they were never available. There is no need for the critter cartridge they are pimping at this point.

Don't see where it's enough improvement over good handloads/premium ammunition or 204 Ruger velocities to exist. Will be just another in pile of cartridges adding to the confusion of existing rounds already requiring odd combination of uppers, magazines and which mixes with what. Discovered it while researching 7mm-223 and 300 OSSM. Will the madness ever stop? Glad I finally stepped off the train of always looking for the next best AR cartridge. With the constraints of magazine length, chamber pressures and others I don't see how anything can be done at this point that significantly eclipses previous attempts without new technologies in mettalurgy, propellants and more in the AR15.

Went in LGS and was cracking on yet another AR15 cartridge. One of the employees got a little defensive and discovered he already had been drinking the kool-aid. As we discussed it he started pulling up specifications from Web and quoting while I asked questions about throat life with such a hot round and fact if didn't already have 6.8 magazines that was a big additional cost including dies, rest of parts to finish complete gun etc. He didn't know Nosler recommended 6.8 mags though had upper and ammo on the way. He went to their store suppliers, Palmetto and others to discover most were totally out of stock or well over $20 each for magazines.

As he was searching for magazines frantically made a couple calls and sent a couple emails. Found him good magazines for 14.97 plus shipping and one of my vendors replied last night had a few 18" fluted Hbar barrel with 5R rifling in 22 Nosler left over from a special order run. Offered one up for an even $100 with shipping and it's on its way. Since have enough 6.8 magazines to sink a boat and would like to at least see if it could be a 400 plus yard varmint getter, now I took a sip of kool-aid. Not buying dies or such yet but plan to run a few rounds of factory ammo, get it ready for spring varmint season and if get an extra 200 yards on ground hogs and coyotes figure a few shots take at that distance may be worth the effort. If doesn't give measurable accuracy improvement in the 400 to 600 yard range over my Mk 12 Mod 1 builds will sell the barrel quickly and recoup investment. If it does and even reaches out a bit farther, 60 rounds per year will cover opportunities at that range and may not even set up to load. Just find factory load it likes and buy four boxes per year.

The TCM 22 will probably become a new best seller once the AR15 version
comes to market.

What pressure is the 22 Nosler loaded to?

What pressure is the 22 Nosler loaded to?

Nosler's website gives reloading data and says all loads meets SAAMI specifications. Many of the loads are marked as being at SAAMI maximum pressure. Go to their page about the cartridge itself says it is a SAAMI adopted cartridge but again do not give a maximum or operating pressure. Went to SAAMI site and 22 Nosler is not on website list yet. Have been to dozens of sites using myriad of search criteria and still not found any pressure data. Nosler predicts barrel life at 2,000 to 4,000 rounds based on type use. Uses same bolt face as 5.56 so only a proprietary barrel and 6.8 magazines will be required.

As dug around, only one page in Nosler information says 3,350 fps for 77 grain bullet but load data lists no load that fast nor does any of their factory ammo data except at 55 grains. Think info on the one page is a typo. Looks like 2,950 is top speed for 77 grain bullet but have some 62 grain Varmigeddon on the way and if decide to load for it, be interested to see how 69 grain SMK's will run. If able the high side 3,000 fps with 69 grain bullet would be heck of a general purpose round. Back to searching, built a pair of lowers today for the 22 Nosler barrel and another 6.8 barrel on the way.

Edit:
Dang if haven't already found a guy who has ordered a reamer to neck this case up to 25 caliber. Being a big quarterbore fan going to try and keep up with how his project turns out. Have never found a 25 caliber cartridge I liked in an AR 15. Neck up to 277 and set the shoulder back and would have a 6.8 that uses 5.56 bolt.

Someday when it's Mel Gibson Mad Max SHTF some poor chaps will be cursing their bullets found not fitting any gun can find. I thought it was confusing when I passed a dozen different cartridges and decided to downsize and standardize on four cartridges. While searching found guys with over 20 obscure vaients in their stables.

All parts are in except scope, top end built and lower built but not mated yet. Going to do a Realtree camoflauge finish similar to my tiger stripe 6.8's so will be no doubt it's not a 5.56 standard rifle. Just ordered scope so need something to do while wait though Midway always ships fast. Found a 4.5-14x Burris Fullfield E1with Ballistic Plex reticle on sale at Midway combined with my birthday discount was worth the gamble on a $455 scope reduced to $359. Have three different ammo types and enough to wring it out and see if worth the hype. Already have people begging to buy but don't build to sell.

Even better optic deal worked out, found two 22 Hornets in back of a vault never shoot with Leupold 6-18x 40mm AO scopes. Ordered another of the Burris 4.5-14x 44mm AO scopes and going to pull the 18x loopy's off the 200 yard max range Hornets, replace with the 14x Burris scopes and have two fine AR scopes. May order another 22 Nosler barrel to celebrate for a matched set.

That's a hell of a list, many I've never heard of.

About barrel life, an old timer once told me a barrel is only good for so many pounds of powder. Whether you burn it in big lots at a time in big calibers or over a longer period of time in tiny calibers, a barrel will only perform so well for so many pounds of powder and that's it.
Sounds like this new comer will see comparable barrel life to a .223, maybe a hair less.

John at White Oak says 2,000 rounds of tack driving then another 2,000 of plinking and replace. Why already ordering another barrel. Be just as easy to build a second rifle to put back and when notice accuracy fall off turn the backup to primary and then the first build for driving minute of man ammo really hard. Imagine green tips pushed an extra 3,000 fps and accurate to 250/300 yards once throat erodes and rifling begins to go.

IF You can afford 2000- 4000 rounds of ammo in 22 Nosler --=You can afford to buy a new barrel !

My wondering Minds asks --What if you neck this up to 6.5--:wink:

Is it going to be better than an Grendel >???? Oh Opened a can- O-Worms Eh !:uhoh:

Already a reamer running around for just that cartridge. Some say Nosler is going to neck it up to 6.8 and try to kill the spec 2's.

Upper is built, only thing missing to finish lower is an FDE castle nut and single point sling adapter. Since receivers, forearm, pistol grip, buffer tube and stock all FDE ordered all the small parts special so except barrel, dust cover and forward assist be matching color. Fire control group is in lower along with other small parts and waiting for AAC 51T suppressor adapter. Tracking shows all parts landing Monday including FDE scope mount. Just wait for Loopy to send scope back and hit it with air dry Cerrakote along with bipod.
