Hi there, Bought an Aussie kit of Sarge's. Just happened to be on the site looking for some ammo when I saw the kit. Being Australian I couldnt resist the urge and bought one. I got the kit in and I'm not familiar with the L1A1 ser#s and the history behind them.

Well, you already know it is an Aussie kit.

The first 2 digits in the serial # being 67 mean it was manufactured in 1967.

Lithgow started the serial numbering at 00001 each new year of manufacture, so your lower was the 5,817th built in 1967 at Lithgow.

I don't have my book handy right now to be able to tell you what contract it was for. Lithgow sold rifles to many different countries over the years of manufacture of the SLR.

Serial number indicates it was issued to the Australian Army.
MA## furniture is Lithgow manufacture. 2 digit number is year made. S is small buttstock.

Your kit came to the US most likely via Malaysia.. They were given a lot of Aussie rifles via military aid over the years and surplused off and sent here in large lots, the Aussies never directly sold anything on the surplus market. I'm guessing that along with the short buttstock that you also have the short F1 flash hider? Nice that the handguards match year wise. More pics needed.. Love the Aussies! I'm tempted to buy one of these but it's hard considering I bought the same thing without a barrel for $249 a few years ago.

IO had the sans barrel kits for $150 7-8 yrs ago. I bought 10. Spent the next 7 years scrounging barrels for them.

I'm probably going to clean it up if I can find the time this weekend. I did wipe the bolt off. Its Ser # is a 64. Once I clean it off I'll snap more pics. I wish it had an original Strayan made barrel and rece, but what for I could afford and as long as it was made on Australian soil its good enough for me mate
