View Full Version : Started my Vepr Build...

Recently picked up a Vepr 7.62x51 on the cheap. It's an early Robinson Arms '97. Looks like it was hardly taken to the range, if at all. Initially, I was thinking about leaving it as is. I mean; these do look striking left alone. Problem is; the smaller PSL style thumbhole stock found on some of the late '90's variants is a horrible fit for my hand (didn't know this until it arrived). I'm only 6'-1". Ruskies must all have small hands, I guess...

After researching many Vepr adapter options, I attempted to contact Snake Hound Machine, as their page says their adapter will fit the old Robinson Arms variants. Alas, zero luck with an email, and with little faith in talking to a CS rep. I went ahead and ordered anyway.

Sure enough, the fit was not even close. After some consideration, weighing my options, I decided to cut the proper angle to match all newer Vepr slant cut receivers. Typically, you want to modify the less expensive part (I get it) but in this case modifying the adapter would be more complex, and also, with the new angle cut I can always default to the more common/plentiful wood furniture for modern slant cut Veprs (Which, I think will fit my hand much better than the original. They appear to have a larger thumbhole). Not to mention; the original slant-cut looked pretty terrible underneath the paint... rough cut, and uneven attempts at sanding in places...

Anyway, using a file I'm slowly starting to cut the new angle. It's taking some time, but I want to get it perfect. Haven't yet decided on a Magpul MOE or Zhukov-S side folder. Will update with pics once I get the fitment perfect...

Nice rifle.

Sharing a photo of my .308 Vepr. Purchased this from a member here with new furniture already in place. Cherry butt stock and handguard came from Rhineland Arms and fits the slant back receiver without modification. Find them here at http://www.troupsystems.com

I've got the fixed 8X POSP optic and the adjustable cheek riser works well here.

Hope you enjoy the Vepr; I've enjoyed mine.

Fits which version without modification? There are two different angles the slant Verps are cut at.

Anyway, nice looking rifle. How does it shoot? Looking forward to taking mine to the range, once it's ready.

Not sure LKY. I would think troop systems would be able to answer that question better than I. I can provide a SN range on my .308 if it would help answer your question. If you want to PM me with an email I can send close up pics of the stock/receiver fit.

Rifle shoots better than I do. Last range trip with POSP mounted I was getting consistent 1-1 1/2 MOA groupings with cheap Perfecta ammo.

No worries on the stock fitment. I'm already committed at this point, anyway.

Great to hear your rifle is so accurate. Especially with the cheap stuff. I'm hoping to have fun with this one.

Here were the last 5 in a 20 round box of Perfecta at 100 yards. You can see she was grouping well but low in the first three groups. I'll take the lone flyer at 11:00. Like is said the rifle shoots better than I do..

Nice! Do you find that it chews up brass? I'd like to be able to reload what I put through it. I've seen a few methods for slowing down ejection, but...

Brass is fine. Ejects 8-10' at about 2:00

Both of my Vepr 308s leave a dent on the brass. It is common.

Fal Files member, bounce, cut a thumbhole stock back in 2014, to make it look "normal". It was a beautiful rifle after the refinish. Hope he chimes in with pics.~ss
ETA, I think Jarhead504, had a saaaweet cherry stock on a vepr.

Slant cut! My Vepr were square cut receivers, very easy to convert! The handguard would be fun while it is secured with a fine thread metric screw that is hard to find in US.

Great shooting the , those VEPRs. Had a PSL years back I was working on; guy comes up to me at the range while I'm running the PSL. He had a VEPR and we swapped guns for a relay. My rifle looked sick the Black Horse Arsenal furniture (buttstock was made from an actual SVD stock in Russia), but that VEPR shot so much better... even then the SVD stock hurt my thumb while shooting. Wasn't very comfortable, ended making a decent amount of money on it when I sold it.

Cut looks nice. Looking forward to seeing the new stock.

Thank you. Really appreciate that. Got the magpul MOE stock fit up. Will post pics soon. Looks nice, but I definitely need to order the extended pad. I do like the black on black look, but also kinda miss the wood stock. Not that I had a particularly attractive stock, but... Oh, well. It certainly is much more comfortable/ergonomic.

Thanks, SS! I'd like to finish off the barrel with an SVD flash hider clone. Then slap some nice glass on it, but...
Sure is a sweet rifle. This is the second Vepr I've owned. Both Robinson Arms. They have a real nice feel about them.
