Hi folks,
This weekend i'll have to choose. An unfired US BAR M1918 or a nice condition FN CAL rifle (not FAL or FNC)?
Both are selective fire, both cost the same (in Belgium)

BAR for sure. U can always snag another FAL, not so sure about a good condition BAR? Esp. at same price.

The FN CAL is NOT a FAL. There are 14 FN CAL's in the US...

This is a FN CAL, made from 1968-1976.

I own a few Belgian BAR's. They are well made.

The M1918A2 is NOT a great weapon. It is legendary, but as a gun, it sucks.
The original design was much better as the ordnance upgrade. JM Browning would turn over in his grave as he see what they made.
About every thing they implemented is useless, heavy, or not needed or a backstap.
But hey, it's like that nice blond girl, it got the looks and cost you money

My two cents

So you are saying it's like a '57 chevy bel aire, obsolete, heavy, awkward, loud, handles terrible and is uncomfortable as hell.

"Between a Rock and a Hard Place" I would go for the BAR

I see what you did there,

A better comparison would be against the FN-D.
Even a Bren. CZ made a decent mag fed LMG that the Bren was derived from.
ZB-26 or 30...

Chevy, mustang, VW beetle, Willy's... Nice, but no thx

The Belgians upgraded there FN BAR model D to the D A1 model.

Well, i can tell they did the right thing. It is by far, the best BAR in the world.

Good sights, QCB, pistolgrip, quick mag release, dustcover, nice bipod on the frame...
But, it misses the looks.

I'd get the FN KAL. Or is it CAL? Remember seeing one in a gun store in either Johannesburg or Pretoria in 1978 or so, they wanted more money for it than I made in 6 months back then.

If the BAR isn't a historically significant piece (WW2, Korea, VN, etc) then go for the CAL.

Hopefully, some one with more knowledge than I will step in to correct this. Everything that I've read about the CAL said the CAL had bugs and function troubles. That's supposed to be why FN quit making the CAL, and developed the FNC.

It is complex&expensively made but, boy, what a nice balanced rifle it is.
No ugly weldingstrips like the FNC, just 100% craftmanship.

I'd buy the BAR. There's just something badass about a select fire 30-06.

I have never fired either one but I would recommend the BAR from an investment point of view. Or I'd get both and never mention it to my wife. Yeah probably that.

Best plan ever

And no, i'm not rich at all. 1 car, 1 house, 240 guns, that's it.
Just lucky with my wife i'll guess

Hi Paco,
The collecting business is often about the deal. Im sure you have something hid in the back of your shop that you could use as bait. This way you get both the BAR and the CAL!

I don't have/own a shop.
It was just plain money...

Anyway, today a US BAR 1918A2 found some friends in a new house...
One mean heavy machine...

Here some low qulity pics. It is bad weather for weeks in Europe, so no good pics.

The BAR seems to be transformed/inspected in 1954 and 68 but looks unfired. There are no signs of any use.
The owner received it as a gift from a gunstore after cleaning some 250 crated BAR's. That was in the 80's
