So I just got in my side mount scope base for my Polish AKM.
I got the Romanian style from AOA. It is very obviously cast. are there any alternate offerings that have a more machined look? This one was cast to final shape.
Is cast the original style, or just a cheap US manufacturing short cut?

This is the one I ordered, received. It looks just like on the web page: http://armsofamerica.com/ak-47receiversideplateromanian.aspx

This is the one from AK-Builder, It has a slightly different shape:
http://ak-builder.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=30260

Is one of these more correct to a Polish build?
Is one of higher quality?
the one I have has a very cast/orange peel appearance. and the dove tails for the scope mount could probably use some clean up work to remove some flash and make them more uniform.

Thanks

originals are cast and machined. Bulgy in particular have reverse image mold numbers on the inside.

I doubt any US are cast. Casting is extremely expensive in setup, for low per unit cost. Even 1000 units would be (I strongly suspect) more cost effective to CNC machine, than to make a mold for casting.

This ^^^^

We would have hundreds of man hours making molds for casting. It's nothing to have upwards of $100,000 in a "simple" production mold.
The cost of the tool steel alone, would be more then machining 1000 units.

Interesting.
Would the one from AK builder represent possibly, an earlier design where more material was removed in machining, perhaps to reduce weight (like FAL lightening cuts), then abandoned? I also noticed that the center rivet hole is counter sunk on this variation.

Whereas the AOA example still has the full rail in the rear intact and no counter sink for the center rivet? This is possibly a later example, or is there something else here? Is one or the other specific to a particular geographic region and/or time?

Thanks

I did get a cheap pot metal cast one at one time, split it trying to rivet it on

Got a Bulgarian about 8 years ago from KVAR for a 74 build with a Bulgarian parts kit and was very happy with it.

Don't overthink it.

There are dozens of variations. Unless you're trying for a specific replica of a specific year of production of a specific Russian model, it just doesn't matter.

Is there a template or tutorial some where? I have one I need to mount.

Not really. I made a template out of angle-iron when I had a hundred to install of the Belarus style.

For the standard AKM/AK74 style, that shares the rear trunion rivet, I install the rear rivet (not set) and then use a depth caliper along the top edge of the receiver. When the back of the rail and front of the rail are equidistant from the top of the receiver (usually around 11mm +/- 0.5mm), I mark the holes.

I then drill them on the mill with a 5/32. This is just under the 4mm rivet size.

I then set the rear rivet, and use parallel clamps to hold the rail flush up against the receiver. I then double check the alignment and enlarge the middle hole through the hole in the rail. This way any subtle misalignment finds it's happy spot (the hole is drilled bigger in the direction of any error). I then set the middle rivet.

Then clamp between the middle and the front and repeat.

Failure to clamp or doing the front before the middle, can leave an air gap between the rail and the receiver wall.

Also, I usually true the back of the rail. I use a surface grinder, but sanding on a flat piece of glass is good too. This way any subtle irregularities in the flatness of the back are removed.

Thanks,
I actually ordered the one from AK builder it appears to be a RMP-7 1k.
The one I got from AOA just seems "off" to me like a raw casting that really does need finish machining. the dovetails for the scope mount would need trued at the very least, other wise I cant see it being a precision attachment.
It looks sort of like an unfinished RMP-7.

I I got the new mount in from AK-Builder. It is vastly better. I swear that the one from AOA looks like a raw casting that is supposed to be finish machined.
